기업 이질성을 고려한 기업가치와 ESG성과의 연관성에 대한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 기업의 환경(E), 사회(S), 지배구조(G) 성과와 기업가치와의 관계를 확인하기 위해 유한혼합모델(FMM; Finite Mixture Modeling)을 사용하여 이질적인 기업 그룹을 분석하고, 각 그룹별 재무성과를 확인하였다. FMM은 독립변수들의 무질서도(Entropy)가 가장 낮은 그룹을 기준으로, 그룹 간 이질성을 구분한다. 표본으로는 2021년 한국ESG기준원에서 평가를 받은 상장기업 중 재무정보를 확인할 수 있고 금융업에 속하지 않는 기업 617개를 사용하였다. 기업의 ESG성과 대리치(Proxy)로는 한국ESG기준원의 ESG평가 점수를 사용하였으며, 기업의 재무성과는 일반적으로 사용되는 규모, 성장성, 안정성, 수익성, 활동성, 생산성인 6개의 재무지표를 선정하였다. 연구결과, 2개의 이질적인 그룹이 존재하고, 이 2개의 그룹은 기업가치와 ESG성과 간에 서로 다른 연관성과 재무적 특성 가지고 있었다. 1그룹은 안정성, 수익성, 활동성이 높은 기업들로, 사회(S)성과가 향상될수록 기업가치가 향상되는 것을 확인되었다. 이는 1그룹은 단기간적인 이익에 집중하는 기업임을 의미한다. 2그룹은 생산성과 규모가 큰 기업들로, 환경(E) 성과가 향상될수록 기업가치가 향상되는 것이 확인되었다. 2그룹의 경우 장기적인 시야를 갖고 ESG에 더 노력하는 기업으로, 궁극적으로 ESG성과가 기업의 규모를 키우고 경기 변동에 안정적으로 대응할 수 있는 지속가능성으로 이어진다는 것을 의미한다. 다만, 지배구조(G)성과는 기업가치와의 관련성이 확인되지 않았다. 본 연구는 ESG성과와 기업가치 간의 관계를 일률적으로 분석한 선행연구와 달리, 기업들이 서로 다른 계수를 갖는다고 가정하여 이질적인 집단을 분류하여 분석했다는 것에 차별점을 갖는다. 또한 본 연구 결과는 기업의 이질성을 고려하여, 맞춤형 ESG경영 전략과 ESG 지원 정책 수립에 통찰력을 제공할 수 있는 점에서 의의를 둔다.

영문 초록

In this study, we analyzed a group of heterogeneous companies using finite mixture modeling (FMM) to confirm the relationship between company’s environmental (E), social (S), and governance (G) performance and firm value. Afterwards, we analyzed the financial performance of each group. FMM distinguishes heterogeneity between groups based on the group with the lowest entropy of independent variables. As a sample, 617 listed companies that were evaluated by Korea Institute of Corporate Governance and Sustainability(KCGS) in 2021, with financial information available and that were not in the financial industry, were used. The KCGS's ESG evaluation score was used as a proxy for the company's ESG performance, and six commonly used financial indicators were selected for the company's financial performance: stability, profitability, activity, productivity, and size. As a result of the study, there were two heterogeneous groups, and these two groups had different correlations and financial characteristics between firm value and ESG performance. Group 1 is a group of companies with high stability, profitability, and activity, and it has been confirmed that firm value improves as social (S) performance improves. This means that Group 1 is a company that focuses on short-term profits. Group 2 is a company with large productivity and scale, and it has been confirmed that firm value improves as environmental (E) performance improves. Group 2 is a company that has a long-term perspective and puts more effort into ESG, which ultimately means that ESG performance leads to sustainability that can increase the size of the company and respond stably to economic fluctuations. However, the relationship between governance (G) performance and firm value was not confirmed. Unlike previous studies that uniformly analyzed the relationship between ESG performance and firm value, this study is different in that it classified and analyzed heterogeneous groups by assuming that companies have different coefficients. Additionally, the results of this study are significant in that they can provide insight into establishing customized ESG management strategies and ESG support policies by considering the heterogeneity of companies.
