영문 초록

Following the subjugation of Outer Mongolia by the Manchu Qing dynasty, border and trade agreements were established with the Russian Empire, enabling the entry of Russian ambassadors and merchants into the Khalkha territory. The local population identified the routes taken by these merchants based on sacred mountains, historical events, and cardinal directions. Recent studies proposed naming these routes the “tea route” after goods widely used in trade, but this designation lacks appropriateness. Traditional names used by Mongols are becoming obscured, necessitating a reconsideration of an appropriate name for this trade route. The trade routes extending from Khiagt to Khuree, and from Khuree to Khaalgan, were designated by the Mongols with various names reflecting their distinct characteristics. These names included the “Darkhan Altan route,” “Choir route,” and “Argali route,” alluding to the sacred and towering mountains along the paths. The routes were also referred to as the “Doloonnuur route” after the destination, and the “Gunji route” and “Shar Nomt route” after significant historical events. These routes circumvented rugged obstacles and traversed water wells, springs, and pastures to facilitate trade and travel.
