이내선의 논문 ‘6도음정’의 선법적, 조성적 기능 (2)

국문 초록

중세와 르네상스의 음악이론은 물론이고 바로크나 그 이후의 경우에도, 당시 이론서들의 설명이 모호하거나 일관적이지 않은 경우가 많아 특정한 주제들을 정확하게 규명하고자 하는 근대의 학자들을 당혹케 해왔다. 그리고 아직도 여러 주제들에 대한 논쟁이 종식되지 못한 상태이다. 이와 같은 현상은 크게 두 가지 원인에서 비롯된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 하나는 당시 이론가들의 입지가 보수적이냐 진보적이냐에 따라 내용이나 관점이 다르게 나타나고, 다른 하나는 원래 실제적인 목적을 위해 고안된 방법들이 시간이 지남에 따라 이론으로 수렴되면서 별개의 기존 이론들과의 결합도 경우에 따라서는 무리하게 시도되었기 때문이다. 옛 이론서에서의 그와 같은 특성으로 인해, 역사적 맥락을 고려하지 않은 지엽적인 인용이나 고찰은 자칫 실제의 핵심과는 거리가 먼 결과를 초래할 수도 있다. 본고는, 이런 문제와 관련하여, 이내선의 논문 “‘6도음정’의 선법적, 조성적 기능 (2): 6음음계로부터 7음음계로 발전하는 과도기의 현상”을 재고하고자 한다. 이 논문에서의 전제들 중 하나로 제시된 16~18세기에 대한 그의 명료한 정의(각각 선법 시대, 과도기, 조성 시대)는 그런 정의에 대해 끝없는 논쟁이 계속되어 온 그 어떤 암시도 없으며, 16세기는 6음음계 시대이고 17세기에 비로소 7음음계가 등장한다는 그의 또 다른 전제는, 이어지는 다양한 인용들과 논의와 함께, 필자가 위에서 언급한 문제에 해당하는 전형적인 예에 속한다.

영문 초록

There has been fundamental embarrassment among scholars towards Baroque music theory let alone that of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. And still debates on a number of subjects are being continued among them. This phenomenon originated from roughly two causes. One is, theorists themselves of those periods showed different points whether they were progressive or conservative. And the other is, some method which was for purely practical purpose incorporated into formal theory along times went by, sometimes forcefully. Thereby, study of old treatises without considering that kind of historical context can cause results which is far away from the real core. Related to this sort of problems, Present paper reconsiders Nai-Sun Lee’s Thesis “Modal and Tonal Function of Interval 6th (2)” in this volume. One of the succinct premises she placed in her thesis(16c is the period of modes, 17c, transition, 18c, tonal period) is without any hint of continued controversy on the subject, and another premise that 16c is the period of hexachord and only from the 17c octave system is emerged is a typical case which ignores the historical context I mentioned above. My paper is divided into two parts. The first deals with the premises she proposed. The second discusses the functions of interval 6th which is also the main part of her thesis. The Problems found in the second part of her thesis comes from the misinterpretation of old treatises from the present point of view such as selecting contents or terms which survived up to now as it was disregarding the process it went through before it acquired that status or terms.
