영화 『배트맨』, 『다크나이트』, 『조커』에서 유도동기의 활용

국문 초록

본 논문은 배트맨을 소재로 만들어진 영화 『배트맨』, 『다크 나이트』, 『조커』에 나타나는 유도동기 기법을 탐구하고, 이들이 세 편의 영화를 하나의 시리즈로 만드는 통일성에 대해 살피고자 하였다. 필자는 테크놀로지의 발전에 힘입은 가상 악기의 진화가 음향과 음색을 유도동기 형성에 참여하는 주요한 결정인자가 되었음을 주장하면서 세 편의 영화에 차별적으로 나타나는 새로운 의미의 ‘유도동기’와 그 활용방식에 주목하였다. 『배트맨』은 모티브에서 파생된 유도동기를 중심으로 다양한 변형을 끌어내는 전통적인 유도동기 처리 방식과 다양한 장르와 성격의 음악을 거리낌 없이 빌려와 대립 구도의 캐릭터를 음악적으로 묘사하는 방식을 연합해 활용하였다. 『다크 나이트』는 전통적인 단3도 모티브에 집착하여 주제적 풍부함의 부족을 가상 악기의 미묘한 음향 조작으로 보상하려는 시도를 보였다. 『조커』에는 비교적 긴 유도동기가 존재하여 그 안의 핵심적 음고들이 모티브로 활용되는 것처럼 들리지만, 캐릭터를 묘사하는 진정한 방식은 리버브의 미묘한 처리를 통한 음향적 뒤틀림임을 확인하였다. 즉, 과학기술의 발전으로 이전보다 훨씬 다양하게 변형된 음향은 음고 중심의 짧고 단순한모티브에 미묘한 색을 입힘으로써 유도동기로 활용될 수 있는 개연성을 확보하였다. 세 영화에공통으로 나타난 음정적 특징과 여기에 새롭게 부여된 고도의 음향 정보는 내러티브를 강화하는유도동기 본연의 역할을 충실히 수행하게 함을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

The aim of this paper is to explore the Leitmotif technique in Batman, Dark Knight, and Joker, all of which take Batman and/or Joker as (a) primary character(s) and to focus on musical devices that make these three as a unified whole. By suggesting timbre and sonority have served as a structural determinant due to the evolution of virtual instruments, I examined the peculiar use of the Leitmotif distinctively in the three films. The commonly used minor 3rd in all the films has been synthesized with diverse timbres produced by electronic device and mixing process, leading to distinguished themes which generate different contextual meaning in the films. Batman shows a fine association of the two different methods in handling music: the Leitmotif derived from the minor 3rd and its subsequent transformations serve as a decisive role of leading the film’s narrative; and multifaceted musics of various genres and styles are without any reservation invited to describe the opposing character’s psychopathy. By sticking to the minor 3rd, Dark Knight attempts to compensate the lack of melodic affluence for subtle and polished controls of virtual instruments. In Joker, timbrel twists caused by the delicate control of reverb played a significant role in describing the character although motivic elements do their roles in the lengthy Leitmotif too. Together with the conventional motive, timbre and sonority which went through far more diverse metamorphoses opened possibility that a brief pitch-centered motive could become the Leitmotif by integrating timbrel and sonic features.
