판타지 양식의 재고를 통한 하인리히 비버의 음악 조명

국문 초록

하인리히 비버는 자신의 대표작 《묵주 소나타》(Rosenkranzsonaten)가 20세기 초반에출판되면서 작품이 지닌 독특한 표제적 성격으로 세간의 주목을 받았다. 그럼에도 비버는 여전히 음악사의 주변부에 위치하고 있을 뿐이다. 본 논문은 비버의 기악 작품에서 드러나는‘음악적 판타지’를 조명함으로써 지금까지 음악사의 관심에서 벗어나 있던 비버에게 정당한역사적 위치를 부여하려 한다. 17, 18세기 키르허(Athansius Kircher)와 마테존(Johann Mattheson)은 음악 양식의 분류를 통해 음악적 판타지를 하나의 ‘양식’(stylus phantasticus)으로 정의하고자 했다. 그러나 이들의 논의에 따라 ‘판타지 양식’을 명확히 하기에는 다소 무리가 있다. 음악적 판타지에 관하여 이들의 견해와 다른 여러 이론가들이 남긴 견해를 살펴보면, 판타지라는 용어는 어느 정도 구체화된 ‘양식’이라기보다는 오히려 음악가의 ‘정신’이나 ‘태도’에 부합한다는 것이 드러난다. 여기에는 음악적 제약으로부터의 일탈과 자유, 독창성과 즉흥성이 포함된다. 이와 더불어 ‘판타지’의 그리스 어원과 철학에서의 논의로 거슬러 올라가면, 음악적 시각화와 상상력또한 중요한 자리를 차지하게 된다. 이렇게 확대된 판타지 양식의 개념을 적용하면, 비버의작품에서 판타지의 특성이 충만하다는 점이 밝혀진다. 본 논문은 비버의 작품들을 분석, 해석함으로써 그 작품들이 지닌 판타지적 면모들을 논한다. 결론적으로 우리는 비버에게 ‘가장독창적인 바로크 시대의 판타지 작곡가’라는 합당한 위상을 새로이 부여할 수 있게 될 것이다.

영문 초록

Heinrich Biber began to receive a lot of attentions after his Rosary Sonatas which have the unique feature of program music was published in the early 20th century. Nevertheless, Biber and his works are not important in music history as ever. This paper aims to give a legitimate historical position to Biber by illuminating the “musical fantasy” implemented in his instrumental works. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Athansius Kircher and Johann Mattheson defined the musical fantasy with an assortment of music style, and called it “Stylus phantastius”. However, they did not provide any clear and precise description for the fantastic style. Other theorists also mentioned a lot about musical fantasy. According to all their opinions, fantasy conforms to the 'spirit' or 'mode' of a musician rather than a 'style'. The spirit or mode includes freedom, ingenuity, improvisation, and departure from any musical constraints. Fantasy should be understood through its Greek origin and its meaning in philosophical discussion. Then, musical visualization and imagination become significant. Biber's works are filled with the nature of fantasy. This paper reveals the features of fantasy in Biber's works by analyzing and interpreting his works. Through this study, Biber should be titled as “the most ingenious composer of the Baroque fantasy” who deserves the position.
