멀티미디어에서 나타나는 필립 글래스(Philip Glass) 음악과 영상의 결합 방식에 관한 연구

국문 초록

이 논문은 미니멀리즘 음악의 양식적 특성이 멀티미디어라는 환경 속에서 어떤 특징을도출하는지 관찰하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이를 위해 미니멀리즘 음악 작곡가 필립 글래스(Philip Morris Glass, 1937~ )와 영화감독 갓프레이 레지오(Godfrey Reggio, 1939~ )가 공동작업한 실험영화 《코야니스카치》(Koyaanisqatsi, 1982)를 분석하고, 글래스의 음악이 ‘영상’과 맺는 관계를 세 가지로 정리한다. 본 논문에서 관찰한 글래스 음악과 영상의 결합방식은 다음과 같다. 첫 번째 결합방식인 ‘음악과 영상의 시청각화’는 미니멀리즘 음악과 이미지가 동일화되는 현상이다. 이런 현상은 글래스 음악의 음형 반복·연타음 그리고 화성적인 정체(harmonic stasis)에서 오는 특유의 회화적 인상이 영화 속 기하학적 이미지와 동일화되면서나타난다. 두 번째 결합방식인 ‘오스티나토로서의 음악과 선율로서의 영상’은 글래스 음악의 ‘화성진행의 반복’이나 ‘음악적 단락’의 반복이 영화 안에서 거대한 오스티나토처럼 작용하며, 이에 결합하는 영상을 마치 ‘선율’처럼 견인하는 현상이다. 보통 대중적이고 단순한 스타일의음악이 한 벌의 화성진행을 반복하고, 이 위에 다양하게 분절되는 영상이 결합하는 경우에 관찰된다. 마지막 결합방식인 ‘영상은 음악에 맞추어 춤을 춘다’는 시간을 기반으로 하는 매체(timebased media)인 영화가 지속적인 비트를 가진 호모포니 짜임새의 미니멀리즘 음악과 결합하는 모습이다. 이 결합방식에서 1개의 시간 축을 갖는 영화는 호모포니 짜임새의 음악과 손쉽게 결합하며, 음악의 특정 지점에 맞추어 편집될 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper explores musical aspects of musical minimalism in multimedia through Koyaanisqatsi(1982), an experimental film, made by Godfrey Reggio and Philip Glass. The followings are a ways of combination of Philip Glass’ music and moving images studied in thispaper. Firstly, the repetition of musical figures in his works makes a synchronization of the visual andauditory senses. It is because the picture-like characteristics of the repeating musical patterns canbe easily juxtaposed with the repetitive patterns of images in the film. Secondly, the repetitions of chordal progress or musical division are employed as musicalostinato in the film. In this case, the moving image of film can be perceived as a musical melodyline. Thirdly, homophonic textures and the steady rhythms of pulses can smoothly combine themselves with the visual medium which has only one screen such as film. For these reasons,music of Glass and moving image create a relationship like that of dance music and dancer. Through an observation of this interaction, various musical features of musical minimalism canbe newly understood as its own characteristics, cannot be interpreted in the formalism context.
