국문 초록

독립운동가·정치가·교육자·불교사상가로서 조국과 불교발전에 크게 기여한 백성욱은 1920년대에 걸쳐 『불교』지 기고를 통해 한국 불교문학의 선구자적 역할도 하였다. 본 논문은 그의 「평수잡조」에 수록된 문학작품의 주요주제를 크게 ①세계상실의 비유와 낭만적 감수성, ②중국(상해)의 자연풍광과 사회실상에 대한 예지적·감상적 통찰, ③미에 대한 진지한 사색, ④근대적 시간과 유한성의 인식으로 분류하여 관련된 몇몇 작품들을 분석해 보았다. 그의 문학작품의 특징은 ①시간적 유한성과 종교적 구도성 강조, ②인류보편성과 주체적 자유의지의 조화성, ③자아의 관조성과 낭만적 구원성 등으로 요약할 수 있다. 그의 작품들은 철학성·조화성·미학성·박이정 등의 총체적 조화의 산물이다. 그의 시와 산문은 문제제기로 그치지 않고 해법과 비전도 제시한다. 국권상실의 시대적 아픔과 고난에 대한 그의 낭만성은 근대적 불교건설, 조국독립, 교육자, 학자로 나아가게 만드는 힘으로 전이되어 세계에 버려진 자아가 세계의 구원자로 바뀔 수 있음을 그의 작품들은 잘 시사해주고 있다. 그의 불교철학과 주요사상들은 실로 심대할 뿐만 아니라 오늘과 미래의 나아갈 길도 잘 제시해주고 있다. 그의 철학과 사상은 비전성·체계성·조화성·보편성을 지니고 있어 향후 국내는 물론 세계적으로 활발한 연구와 큰 발전이 기대된다.

영문 초록

As an independence activist, politician, educator, and Buddhist thinker, Dr. Baek Sung-wook, who greatly contributed to the development of his country and Buddhism, played a pioneering role in Korean Buddhist literature through active contributions to the journal Buddhism throughout the 1920s. This paper analyzed several related works by classifying the main themes of literary works in his 'Pyeongsu-Japjo'(萍水雜俎) into ①metaphor and romantic sensitivity of world loss, ②predictive(wise) and sentimental insights into the natural scenery and social realities of China(Shanghai) ③serious contemplation of beauty, ④the recognition of modern time and finiteness. The characteristics of his literary work can be summarized as ①emphasis on temporal finiteness and seeking religious ways, ②harmony between universality of mankind and subjective free will, and ③self-contemplation and romantic salvation. His works are the product of the overall harmony of philosophy, harmony, aesthetics, and broadness&precision. His poems and prose do not stop at raising problems, but also present solutions and visions. His romanticism about the pain and suffering of the loss of national sovereignty has spread to the power of modern Buddhist construction, homeland independence, educators, and scholars, suggesting that the self abandoned in the world can be transformed into the world's savior. His Buddhist philosophy and major ideas are not only really profound, but they also provide a good way forward today and in the future. His philosophy and ideas have vision, system, harmony, and universality, so active research and great development are expected not only in Korea but also in the world in the future.
