국문 초록

기존의 연구에서는 『투항자들』을 전쟁의 트라우마를 연대를 통해 치유하는 과정을 다룬 소설로 보는 시각이 우세한 편이었다. 본고에서는 기존의 독법에 바탕을 둔 채, 사랑과 자비가 트라우마 이후의 삶을 갱생으로 이끌게 되는 점에 주목하여 텍스트를 살펴보았다. 타인을 향한 진정한 사랑과 자비의 마음이 인간이 지닌 내면적 폭력성에 대한 항체로 기능할 수 있는 가능성을 탐색하는 것으로 텍스트를 파악하였다.

영문 초록

The Surrendered by Chang-rae Lee portrays the ways traumatized people rediscover their raisons d’être. This paper first examines the notion of ‘surrender’ to conclude that ‘surrender’ has multiple implications: the demise of an individual, the loss of one’s will to live, or the spiritual deliverance. Then, this paper argues that the virtue of mercy plays a pivotal role in resurrecting the broken souls of those who have survived the traumas of wars, famines, and other forms of violence. The ways mercy is practiced in the text, however, rarely conforms to the codes of existing Christianity, which is based upon binary oppositions: the good and the bad, the virtuous and the vicious, the moral and the immoral etc. This paper thus claims that, while highly regarding the virtue of mercy, The Surrendered challenges the ways orthodox Christianity practices it and suggests alternative and more intricate ways to understand it.
