국문 초록

한국의 호국불교는 중생의 고통을 덜어주고 불국정토를 실현한다는 불교적 이상을 끊임없는 외세의 침략을 받아온 한국적 현실에 적용하면서 역사적으로 형성된 이념이다. 호국불교는 신라 삼국통일의 사상적 실제적 기초를 제공하고 고려와 조선왕조를 통하여 외침을 극복하는데 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 호국불교는 특권층의 보호를 위해서가 아니라 국가사회를 통합하고 민족의 자주권을 지키는 수 있는 정법치국사상(正法治國思想)이었다. 호국경전들은 불타의 정법(正法)에 따르고 중생의 이익을 위해 나라가 다스려지면 국란을 극복하고 국리민복이 이루어질 수 있다고 가르친다. 호국불교는 오늘에 계승 발전시켜야 할 우리 민족의 자랑스러운 유산이다. 현대국가에서 호국불교가 지켜야 할 대상은 국가의 운영원리와 기본권 등을 열거한 대한민국헌법이다. 헌법에는 완전하지는 않지만 자유, 평등, 우애의 이념과 인간의 존엄성 존중 등 붓다가 추구한 이념들을 규정하고 있다. 오늘날 불교도들은 현대적인 호국의 대상으로 헌법을 수호하고, 국가적 과제에 대하여 국민의 의지를 결집하며, 불교의 보시정신에 따라 사회복지에 기여하고, 복 짓는 마음

영문 초록

Korean state-protection(護國) Buddhism has been historically established religion to realize the Buddha’s idea to end sentient suffering and build a land of happiness in Korea surrounded by hostile powers. In the early era, Silla was successful in applying Buddhist religious faith to the foundation of a stronger state and unification of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. During Goryo dynasty as well as Josun dynasty the state-protection Buddhism played important roles in protecting Korean nation against foreign invasions and securing internal stability. It is a sort of governing philosophy not for the ruling elite but for the benefit of all human beings. Several Buddhist sutras teach that any national leader should follow Buddhist dharma if he wants his nation safe and prosperous. The state-protection Buddhism is one of the proud national heritages to be preserved and developed. In this democratic world, what the Korean state-protection Buddhism should protect is Constitution which prescribe the people, territory and sovereignty of Korean state. The Constitution of the Republic of Korea contains the idea of freedom, equality, fraternity and the dignity of man which the Buddha taught us to enhance. In this modern era, if Korean Buddhists should try to protect the Constitution, collect the will of the people in mass, contribute to social welfare, and work hard in their occupations, they can contribute greatly to the development of the Korean state and society.
