제약·바이오 기업의 ESG경영에 대한 사례연구

국문 초록

세계적인 기후변화 위기를 거치면서 최근에는 ESG와 같은 비재무적 정보의 중요성이 점차 커지고 있다. 아울러, 환경 및 사회적 가치를 중시하는 방향으로 세계적인 패러다임이 전환되면서 ESG는 기업의 장기적인 생존에 직결되는 핵심적인 가치로 인식되고 있다. 이러한 배경에서 본 연구는 제약·바이오산업에서 ESG경영에 앞장서고 있는 ㈜삼성바이오로직스의 지속가능경영 수준 및 개선사항을 살펴보고자 한다. 주된 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, ㈜삼성바이오로직스의 ESG경영을 유엔지속가능발전목표(UN-SDGs)와 연계하여 분석한 결과 17개의 목표 중 5개의 목표(목표1, 목표2, 목표10, 목표11, 목표17)와 연계된 지속가능발전목표 선정 및 세부 목표별 지속가능경영활동이 없음을 확인할 수 있었으며, 향후 이를 추가 반영하여 글로벌 수준에 부합하는 노력이 필요한 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, ㈜삼성바이오로직스 ESG경영을 한국ESG기준원(KCGS)의 평가 프레임워크(Framework)를 참고하여 분석하였는데, 삼성바이오로직스는 제품 책임 및 안정성 강화, 안전환경, R&D경영을 통한 글로벌 경쟁력 강화 등에 대해 주력하고 있으며, 지배구조(G) 영역보다는 환경(E)과 사회(S) 영역에 대한 수준이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 향후 글로벌 기준에 부합하는 지배구조(G) 개선의 필요성을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. 본 연구는 세계적인 패러다임이 환경 및 사회적 가치를 중시하는 방향으로 전환되고 있는 상황에서 ㈜삼성바이오로직스의 ESG경영 분석을 통해 국내 제약·바이오 기업의 ESG 경영체계 확립 및 발전을 위한 시사점을 제시하는 데 도움이 될 것이라 판단된다. 아울러, 제약·바이오 기업을 대상으로 ESG 사례를 연구하였다는 점에서 기존 연구와 구별되는 차별성이 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In recent years, the importance of the non-financial dimensions of organizational activities such as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals has increased as companies have been impacted by the global climate change crisis. Furthermore, with the global paradigm shift toward a greater emphasis on environmental and social goals, ESG has been recognized as a core dimension that is directly related to the long-term survival of companies. Thus, this study analyzes the sustainable management agenda and potential future improvements in this area of Samsung Biologics, a company in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry that has taken the lead in ESG management. The findings of this study are as follows. First, in examining Samsung Biologics’ ESG management activities regarding the UN-SDGs, we found no information on the sustainable development goal selection process nor on goal-specific sustainable activities for five of the 17 SDGs (Goal Nos. 1, 2, 10, 11, and 17). Therefore, in the future, it is necessary for companies to establish and implement sustainable manage- ment goals consistent with global standards in these five areas. Second, in analyzing Samsung Biologics’ ESG management with reference to the evaluation framework of the KCGS, we found that the company focuses on strengthening its global competi- tiveness based on product responsibility and stability enhancement, environmental safety, and R&D management. Furthermore, the assessment shows that the company focuses more on the environmental (E) and social (S) domains than on the governance (G) domain, indicating a need to improve the governance (G) dimension to meet the global standards of the future. This research has implications for the establishment and development of ESG management systems in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in South Korea, as the global paradigm is shifting toward an emphasis on environmental and social values. Furthermore, this study differentiates itself from others in that it consists of a case study of the ESG management of a pharmaceutical and biotechnology company.
