국문 초록

연구목적: 본 연구는 중개형 플랫폼으로서 종합무역상사가 정부의 지원정책을 활용하여 양면 시장에서 플랫폼의 지위를 확대하고 네트워크 효과와 교차 네트워크 효과를 창출하는 과정을 보여준다. 종합무역상사 지정과 제도적 지원이 주는 시그널링(signaling)효과와 함께 해외법인에 부여된 현지금융과 외환관리의 재량이 어떻게 종합무역상사의 활동과 계열기업을 포함한 사업포트폴리오 재편에 활용되었는지 살펴본다. 해외 주요거점에 집중된 외화자금이 대규모 프로젝트를 위한 투융자에 활용된 점도 살펴본다. 논문구성/논리: 연구의 전반적 내용과 구조에 대한 설명에 이어 (제I장), 종합무역상사 사업모델의 진화를 이론적 틀에서 조명하였다(제II장). 제III장에서는 종합무역상사에 대한 정책지원이 구체적 경영활동에 어떤 영향을 주었는지 문헌자료와 인터뷰를 통해 살펴본다. 특히, 환경변화가 주는 전략적 과제를 플랫폼 흡수의 관점에서 분석한다. 제IV장에서는 본 연구가 주는 정책적 의미와 학문적 의미를 정리하였다. 제V장에서는 본 연구의 내용을 종합 정리하고 연구의 의미와 한계, 앞으로의 과제를 제시하였다. 결과: 양면 시장과 플랫폼 전략의 관점은 종합무역상사의 제도적 배경, 구조와 전략에 대해서 의미있는 시사점을 제공한다. 정부의 정책은 국내 수출입 절차와 금융에 대한 직접적 지원과 함께 국내외 관계자들에게 지원의 의지를 입증하는 효과가 있었고, 해외법인의 현지활동에 있어 정부와 기업, 금융사가 협력하여 문제를 해결하는데 도움을 주었다. 해외법인의 현지금융은 중개형 플랫폼의 입지를 강화하고 관련 기업들의 네트워크 효과를 확대시켰다. 독창성/가치: 기존의 종합무역상사에 대한 연구들이 제도의 변화나 상사 활동의 경쟁요인에 초점을 둔 반면, 본 연구는 산업경제학과 경영전략의 연구를 바탕으로 중개형 플랫폼으로서 종합무역상사의 사업모델과 가치창출 과정을 밝혔다. 정책지원이 경영활동에 어떤 영향을 주었는지 구체적으로 분석하고 종합무역상사와 계열기업에 있어 현지금융이 수행한 역할을 밝힌 점, 특히 주요 거점에 외화를 집중시켜서 금융역량을 확대한 과정을 살핀 점은 본 연구의 공헌이다.

영문 초록

Purpose: Based on the ideas of two-sided market and platform intermediary, this study explores the role of government support programs in the evolution of General Trading Companies(GTC). As part of the export-driven growth strategy, the Korean government provided various privileges to GTCs. Contrary to the role of export-financing program, there has been little attention to the signaling implication and the privileges for the overseas activities. Pooling of financial resources in the selected overseas subsidiaries also need further attention. This study analyzes the contribution of these activities in the evolution of GTC platform. Composition/Logic: Following the general overview of the study (Chapter I), Chapter II analyzes the GTC business model through the lens of platform intermediary in the historical context. Chapter III analyzes the role of export-promotion programs in the trading practice. Signaling implication and role of overseas subsidiaries are highlighted. Chapter IV draws policy implication from this study, and proposes alternative points of view limits of the study and future research implication are summarized in Chapter V. Findings: Korean government provided General Trading Companies with the privileged access to the export financing for effective control. In addition to the privileged of export financing program, the various support programs contributed to the platform position of GTCs. Effective use of trade-financing further strengthened the role of platform intermediaries. Resource pooling in the selected overseas subsidiaries contributed to enhanced financing capacity of the GTC platform as a whole. Originality/Value: His study explains the privileged financing programs as ‘subsidy’ in the platform intermediaries. Contrary to the past studies, this study attempts to shed light on the role of selected overseas subsidiaries in project financing. Signaling implication of the government support programs is another contribution of this study.
