국문 초록

한국사상사에서 원효의 위상에 대한 평가는 새삼 논의의 여지가 없다. 때로는 불교이론의 원류로서 때로는 무애행의 자취로서 한국정신의 바탕이 되어 왔다. 그러나 그것이 기록의 그림자에만 머문다면, 삶을 이끄는 진리로서의 의미는 사라지고 만다. 원효의 사상에서 돋보이는 점은 ‘사람’과 그로부터 야기되는 ‘괴로움’에 대한 방향 제시이다. 원효는 바로 이 문제의 적절한 해답을 실천을 통해서 제시했다. 수행이란 머리가 아니라 몸으로 느끼는 것이며, 자기희생을 통해 다른 사람을 행복하게 해주는 것이야말로 최고의 깨달음이라는 것을 여실히 보여주었다. 그리고 일연은 이 점을 높이 산 것이다. 행동으로 실천하지 않고 이론에 묶여 있는 자신을 보았던 원효는 이론과 계율 그리고 깨달음까지 버렸으며, 중생을 건넨다는 시각이 아니라 중생과 하나가 되었다. 걸림 없었던 그 삶의 궤적을 보살행이라 불러도 지나친 표현은 아닐 것이다. 위대함이란 시대정신을 초월하는 희망을 제시한다. 원나라의 침략과 무신정권으로 피폐해진 삶에, 공동체의 가치를 실현할 수 있는 보살행을 실천한 원효의 삶은 일연에게 절실하게 필요한 모델이었다. 삼국유사 에서 철저한 인간의 모습으로 표현한 일연의 의도 역시 현실과 동떨어진 위대성을 부각시키고 싶지 않았기 때문이다. 원효가 제시하는 정토 역시 가야 하거나, 갈 곳을 말하는 것은 아니다. 利他의 실천행을 통하여 함께 하는 세상을 열어가는 것, 그것이 곧 원효가 우리에게 열어주고자 했던 극락이요 정토이다.

영문 초록

Won-hyo's status from his achievement in Korean history of thought requires no emphasis. As the root of Buddhist theory, sometimes as the footprints of free will, it has been the basis of Korean mind. But if it stay just as a record, its meaning of leading the life will disappear. The feature of his theory is suggestion of the direction to 'the humans' and 'the suffer' from them. Won-hyo proposed the answer of this question through his action. He showed that asceticism is about your body, not head, and also that one's best realization comes from making other people happy by his or her self-sacrifice. Then Il-yeon praised this point highly. Still sticking to holding the theory after realizing the truth of existence is like a person carrying the boat even after arriving on the new land. Won-hyo realized that he had been tied up to the theory without any action. So he abandoned the theory, the religious precepts, and also the realization. Then he did not led humankind, but he became one with the humankind. The path of his life may be called as the life of Bodhisattva. Greatness provides the hope which transcends even the zeitgeist. Desperately, Il-yeon needed his model that could cause the community spirit to the devastated society because of the invasion by Won dynasty and Goryo military regime. The reason that Il-yeon depicted him as a completely normal person in The Heritage of the Three States(三國遺事) was also not to put the emphasis on his greatness. Won-hyo tried to help the people to get the peace of their mind in their lives by suggesting the Buddhist Elysium. But it didn't mean the place to arrive at or the way to go. That Elysium he suggested was opening the new world of sharing by practicing the altruism together.
