국문 초록

수운 최제우의 사상은 제폭구민을 기치로 발발한 동학혁명의 사상적 기초가 되었다는 점에서 커다란 의의를 가진다. 수운의 대표작으로 인식되고 있는 『용담유사』에는 문학적 측면과 종교적인 의의 못지않게 강한 이데올로기성이 내포되어 있다. 수운 사상의 핵심으로 일컬어지는 ‘시천주’관은 ‘동귀일체’로 수렴되는 바 그것은 다음과 같은 이념성을 내포하고 있다. 첫째는 인도주의 사상이다. 이것은 수운의 사상을 포괄하는 것으로 그의 사상 전반에는 인간에 대한 존중의 정신이 내재되어 있는 바 이것은 인내천(人乃天) 사상의 기초가 되었다. 둘째, 본원적 평등사상이다. 수운의 사상에는 반상(班常), 주종(主從), 빈부(貧富), 적서(嫡庶), 남녀(男女)간 차별에 대한 경계가 반영되어 있다. 이것은 궁극적으로 평등의식으로 구현되었다. 셋째, 민권의식의 제고이다. 수운의 민중관은 정치적 평등과 경제적 평등을 지향하고 있는 바 이것은 수운의 동학사상이 지역과 신분을 초월한 광범위한 지지를 얻게 되는 바탕이 되었다. 넷째, 구국정신으로 당시의 현실에 대한 비판의식에서 발원하였다. 이것은 그의 인도주의적 ‘제폭구민’ 사상이 정치 현실에 적용되어 구현된 것이다. 다섯째, 대외관으로 이것은 소중화를 탈피한 자주 국가관과, 서세동점에 대한 경계를 드러낸 반서구관, 대일관 등으로 표현되어 있다. 수운의 사상들은 동학혁명 당시 동학군에 의해 제시된 폐정개혁안으로 구현되었다. 이러한 관념들은 당시의 민중들의 민권, 민생의 정신과 자주의식을 일깨워 동학혁명이 일어나게 되는 기폭제가 됨으로써 한국민주주의의 발전에 크게 기여하였다.

영문 초록

The philosophy of Suwoon leaves an impressive lesson for us in that it provides a theoretical basis for the Dong Hak Revolution which stood for 'Non Violence and Save the People.' In Suwoon's most representative work, Yong Dam Yu Sa, a strong ideological element of thought is contained, as well as elements of literary and religious thought. ‘Si Chon Ju(Heaven is in my Mind),' regarded as the key to Suwoon's philosophy, boils down to 'Dong Gui Il Che(Spiritual Joint)'; and it includes within itself the following ideological character. The first part of it concerns humanitarianism. This comprehends the whole of Suwoon's philosophy in which there is a lane of thought, standing for the respect towards fellow human beings; and this has become the philosophical basis for In Nae Chon(Human is Heaven) thought. The second part of Suwoon's ideological thought concerns fundamental equality of all human beings. In Suwoon's philosophy, an attitude of vigilance exists on such discriminating elements among humans as elites-plebeians(Bansang), masters-subjects(Jujong), the rich-the poor(Binbu), legitimate child-illegitimate child(Jokseo), man-woman(Namyeo). It was expressed ultimately as equality consciousness. The third part of Suwoon's ideology concerns enlarging the consciousness of people's rights. Suwoon's view of the people was pointed to political and economic equality; and this has become the basis for Dong Hak thought to be widely supported by the people. The fourth part of Suwoon's ideology concerns patriotism. It originated from critical consciousness towards the reality to which he was exposed. This was realized through applying his humanitarian thought of 'Non Violence and Save the People' to the political reality of his times. The fifth concerns his view of foreign countries. This was expressed as overcoming the small-China-consciousness for erecting an autonomous state, anti-Western forces and anti-Japanese force. Especially his anti-Westernism reflected a vigilance on the Western forces and their increasing encroachment of the East. Suwoon's philosophy was institutionalized at the time of Dong Hak Revolution through a proposal, suggested by the Dong Hak army, for reshuffling government structure and reform. This aspect of his philosophy awakened the slumbering people's consciousness on their rights, their life, and autonomy spirits; and it worked significantly as a cause for the occurrence of revolution, and later contributed to the development of Korean democracy.
