국문 초록

본고는 종교라는 사회제도가 인간의 성행동에 어떠한 영향을 미치었는가를 개략적으로 살펴본 글이다. 전통사회로부터 근래에 이르기까지 대부분의 종교가 인간의 성욕 표현이나 성욕 발산을 조정하거나 억압하면서 고유한 성 문화를 창조하고 발달시켜왔다. 또 종교마다 성욕 표현을 조정하거나 억압하는 기준 설정이 조금씩 차이가 있는데, 그와 같은 차이는 기본적으로 성의 쾌락추구(또는 종족보존) 기능을 어떻게 보고 있는가에 달려있다. 본고에서는 그 쾌락추구 기능의 관점들을 원시종교들로부터 근래 우리 문화권에 영향을 크게 미친 기독교에 이르기까지 비교․조망해보았다. 아울러 전통사회에서는 종교가 인간의 성행동에 미치는 영향이 지대했지만, 과거에 비해서 근래는 그 영향력이 감소된 상태, 즉 종교제도의 본능 통제의 양상이 변하였음을 본고에서 암시했다.

영문 초록

This is an article to review broadly how religion as a social institution could affect human sexual behaviors. Most religions have been controlling or suppressing peoples' expression of sexual desire from the traditional societies till now, and thus specific sex cultures have been created and developed. Every religion has had its own criterion to control or suppress the expression of the desire, and the criterion is primarily dependent upon how much a religion should emphasize the recreational (or procreative) function of sexual expression. A variety of viewpoints on the recreational function were compared and/or reviewed from the ancient religions to the Christianism that began to exercise its influence over the Korean culture since the late 18th century in this article. It is also suggested that the religious institution has recently been less influential on controlling or suppressing peoples’ sexual desire than before in this article, although religion had exercised its great influence on human sexual behavior in the traditional societies.
