니체, 톨스토이, 그리고 20세기 초 동북아시아의 정신사

국문 초록

19세기 말과 20세기 초 생존경쟁, 우승열패, 적자생존과 같은 사회진화론적용어들은 동북아시아 담론의 중심에 들어와 있었다. 자강, 투쟁, 자립, 민족, 진 화, 진보 등의 용어는 전통적 유교세계에서 벗어나 제국주의적 세계문명에 대응 하는 동북아시아의 전략적 사고를 보여준다. 동북아시아에서 이러한 논의를 주도해 나간 것은 니체주의와 톨스토이주의이 다. 이 담론은 러시아의 그롯(Nikolai Grot)이 제기했고, 일본에서는 고니시 마스 타로(小西增太郞)가 이를 소개하고, 중국의 량치차오(梁啓超)나 왕궈웨이(王國 維)의 근대성 논의에 영향을 주었다. 대한제국에서는 1909년 『서북학회월보』에 서 처음 이 담론이 다루어졌는데, 이는 그롯이 해결하지 못한 니체주의(애기愛己) 와 톨스토이주의(愛他)의 한계를 극복하며 윤리적 사회적 자아를 찾는 시도로 이 어졌다. 니체와 톨스토이 담론은 각기 다른 제국주의의 역사적 입지에 처해있던 동북아시아에서 사회진화론, 근대화, 국가주의, 전통의 해체, 시대와 문화의 위기, 사회개혁, 개인의 자각 등 역사적 지성사적 문맥과 밀접하게 연관되어 있었고, 이 담론은 이후 동북아시아의 정신사의 발전에 지대한 영향을 주었다.

영문 초록

At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, Social evolutionary terms such as the ‘struggle for survival’ or ‘the survival of the fittest’ were at the center of Northeast Asian discourse. The terms such as self-empowerment, struggle, independence, nation, evolution, and progress etc. illustrate the strategic thinking of Northeast Asia in response to imperial world civilization, free from the traditional Confucian world. It was Nietzscheanism and Tolstoyanism that led this discussion in Northeast Asia. This discourse was brought up by Russian Nikolai Grot, was introduced by Konishi Masutarō in Japan and whereafter influenced the modernity discussion of Liang Qiao and Wang Guowei in China. In the Korean Empire, this discourse was first addressed in The Northwest Academic monthly Journal in 1909, which led to attempts to find ethical and social egos, overcoming the limitations of Nietzscheanism and Tolstoyanism, which N. Grot did not solve. The discourse of Nietzsche and Tolstoy was closely associated with historical intellectual contexts such as social evolution, modernization, nationalism, dissolution of tradition, crisis of times and culture, social reform, and individual awareness in Northeast Asia. This discourse had a profound effect on the development of intellectual history in Northeast Asia.
