국문 초록

피에르-장-조르주 카바니스(Pierre-Jean-Georges Cabanis, 1757-1808)는 18세기 프랑스를 대표하는 의사이며 철학자이며 정치가일 뿐만 아니라 현대 의학의 형성에 지대한 영향을 주었던 인물이다. 특히 카바니스가 제안한 임상의학의 이념과 방법론은 현대 유럽 의철학을 이해하기 위해 검토되어야 할 필요가 충분히 있다. 본 논문에서는 임상의학이 어떠한 철학에 기초해 있는지를 밝히고자 카바니스가 수립한 임상의학의 철학을 소개하고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 카바니스가 계승한 히포크라테스(Hippocrates, 460-370 av. J.-C.)의 의학적 경험주의와 더불어 로크(John Locke, 1632-1704)와 콩디야크(Etienne Bonnot de Condillac, 1714-1780)의 인식론적 회의주의를 추적하고 이를 바탕으로 제안된 임상의학의 3가지 목표와 4가지 분석법을 살펴볼 것이다. 이어서 임상적 실용주의의 입장에서 카바니스가 왜 임상적 통계와 확률의 중요성을 강조했는지를 검토하고 결국 임상의학에서는 임상적 통찰이 필요하며 이 통찰은 도덕적 확실성에 근거해야함을 확인할 것이다.

영문 초록

Pierre-Jean-Georges Cabanis(1757-1808) is not only medical doctor, philosopher, and politician representing Eighteenth-century medicine in France, but also one of the major figures who profoundly influenced the formation of modern medicine. Especially his idea and methodology on clinical medicine demand full attention in order to understand contemporary European philosophy of medicine. This paper thus aims to introduce Cabanis’ philosophy of clinical medicine and to illuminate the philosophical foundation of clinical medicine. To this end, the paper pursues Hippocrates(460-370 B.C.)’ medical empiricism inherited by Cabanis as well as John Locke(1632-1704) and Étienne Bonnot de Condillac(1714-1780)’s epistemological scepticism. On the basis of this medical and philosophical background Cabanis’ proposition of 3 goals and 4 methods in clinical medicine are examined. To conclude, giving a thought to the reason why Cabanis emphasized the importance of clinical statistics and probability from the position of clinical pragmatism, the paper uncovers the fact that clinical intuition is indispensable in clinical medicine and this intuition should be firmly founded on moral certainty.
