의학교육과 예술의 창의적 만남

국문 초록

최근 국외 의학교육에서 가장 주목할 만할 변화 가운데 하나로 의료인문학 교과과정의 다양화와 창의적 예술 프로그램(문학 및 공연, 시각 예술, 음악, 영화 등)의 도입과 개발을 들 수 있다. 특히 북미와 유럽을 중심으로 의료인문학의 전통 속에서 진행되어온 의학과 인문학, 예술의 깊은 관계에 대한 인식이 점증되면서 인문학적 사고와 예술 체험을 담은 통합교육 프로그램의 개발은 초미의 관심사로 대두되고 있다. 오늘날 의학교육에서는 학생들로 하여금 의과학적 지식을 습득하는 것 외에도 상당히 많은 것을 요구하고 있다. 즉 환자의 권리와 개인적 상황에 대한 이해와 더불어 효과적인 의사소통기술을 익히고 치료와 연관된 도덕적, 윤리적 책임감을 수용하는 등 많은 사항들을 습득하고 연마할 것을 권하고 있다. 물론 의학교육에서 이와 같은 것들이 제대로 성취될 수 있다면 이는 대단히 이상적 교육이라 하겠다. 그러나 인간의 생활양식, 사회문화적 상황과 연관된 이 같은 개념 및 요소들은 과학적 지식과는 달리 상당히 유동적이며 주관적 성격을 지니기에 여러 복잡한 상황과 더불어 ‘과연 어떻게 가르칠 것인가?’라는 실천적 문제를 고민하게 만든다. 현재 활발히 진행 중인 의학교육에서 창의적 예술 프로그램의 도입은 이 같은 문제의식에 대한 새로운 방법론의 적용과 실험과정이라 하겠다. 거시적 관점에서 교육연극은 정신과 몸, 이론과 실천의 조화를 꾀하는 ‘이해의 성장’을 목표로 한다. 의학교육에서 응용연극(토론연극과 퍼포밍 메디신)의 활용은 다음과 같은 목표와 효과를 구할 수 있다: 창의성과 심미적 교육; 텍스트 해석을 통한 인문학적, 비판적 사고의 함양; 대인관계에서 자신감의 향상과 공감능력 키우기; 움직임과 화술 훈련을 통한 자기표현 및 의사소통 기술의 증진; 디지털 시대 아날로그적 사고와 감수성 훈련을 통한 자아인식 및 도덕적, 정신적 가치의 발달.

영문 초록

One of the most remarkable changes in recent medical education in overseas countries has been the introduction and development of integrated arts-based programs including literature, visual arts, theatre, film etc. into the medical curriculum. Especially, in Europe and North America as the deep connections that exist between arts, humanities and medicine are gradually being recognized, there is increasing interest in integrating arts and humanities perspectives into medical education in terms of interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning. Medical education today requests students to equip with many things other than acquiring knowledge of medical science. In other words, it recommends them to learn and practice many things including effective communication skills and treatment-related moral and ethical responsibilities along with understanding a patient’s right and personal background. For sure it would be ideal if the above requirements can be obtained through medical education. Nevertheless, such concepts and elements related to human life styles and socio-cultural situations are very flexible and subjective. Thus, a practical question ‘How to teach it?’ arises in the complex situation. Active introduction of the arts into the medical curriculum recently can be interpreted as the application of a new methodology and an experiment for the above question. In a macro perspective, theater education is intended to achieve ‘growth of understanding’ that pursues harmony of the mind and the body and of a theory and a practice. The applied drama (forum theater, performing medicine) in medical education share the following goals and effects: creativity and aesthetic education; the enhancement of self-confidence and emotional literacy in personal relationships; the improvement of humanities and critical thinking through text interpretation; self-expression and communication skills through moving and conversation training; the development of self-awareness, moral and mental values through analog thinking in the digital era and sensitivity training.
