국문 초록

이 연구는 면접조사를 통해 동기, 성장, 정착, 의미의 4단계로 미국 한글학교 교사의 공통적인 삶의 의미를 밝혀내었다. Giorgi 현상학적 방법을 적용하여 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫 단계로 한글학교 교사가 된 동기는 학부모로 한글학교에 자녀를 데리고 갔다가 그것이 계기가 되어 한글학교 교사가 되었다. 대부분 교육 관련 직업 출신으로 처음에는 많은 어려움이 있지만 부모의 심정과 교사의 사명감으로 초기 단계를 극복하였다. 둘째 단계로 한글학교 교사로서의 성장통을 깊게 겪었다. 교사의 자발적인 역량개발 노력, 정부의 지원 등이 한글학교 교사의 성장을 도왔다. 셋째 단계는 한글학교 교사로서의 전문성이 갖추어졌다. 오랜 한글학교의 역사를 통해 자리 잡은 경험과 체계적인 운영 노하우, 그리고 교사들 간의 도움과 협조 등이 큰 역할을 하였다. 낯선 외국에 살면서 한국계의 정체성을 갖고자 하는 공통적 가치가 교사와 학부모와 학생에게서 발견되었다. 한류의 인기는 국격 상승과 함께 한글학교의 위상을 높였고, 한글학교 교사들의 전문성이 향상되면서 교육의 질도 높아졌다. 넷째 단계는 한글학교 교사가 삶의 전부가 되었다. 처음에는 삶의 일부분이었고, 희생이라고 생각하였지만, 지금은 보람과 만족이 더 커서 삶의 큰 의미가 되었다. 이 연구의 대상은 미국의 한글학교라는 제한이 있어 한글학교 교사의 삶을 일반화하기는 힘들다. 향후 전 세계 여러 나라의 한글학교 교사의 삶을 연구해볼 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to find the essential meaning of the lives of Korean school teachers in the United States. The data was analyzed using the phenomenological research method of Giorgi. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. Through the interview survey, the common meaning of life of Korean school teachers was revealed in four stages: motivation, growth, settlement, and meaning. The first step motivation to become a Korean school teacher was: as parents, taking their children to a Korean school. Most of them came from education-related professions, and although there were many difficulties at first, they overcame the initial stage with the feelings of parents and the sense of duty of the teachers. In the second stage, they experienced deep growing pains as teachers. Teachers' voluntary competency development efforts and government support helped the professional growth of Korean school teachers. There were many failures, worries, sacrifices and investments, but through this, they continued to develop themselves. The third stage was to develop professionalism as a Korean school teacher. Experience, systematic operation know-how, and help and cooperation among teachers played a big role. The common value of living in an unfamiliar foreign country and wanting to have a Korean identity was found among teachers, parents, and students. The popularity of Hallyu raised the status of Korean schools along with the rise of national prestige, and the quality of education also improved as the professionalism of Korean school teachers improved. In the fourth stage, the Korean school teacher became everything in life. At first, the job was a part of life and they thought it was a sacrifice, but now it is more rewarding and satisfying, and it has become the meaning of life. It is difficult to generalize the life of a Korean school teacher because the subject of this study is a Korean school in the United States. In the future, it is necessary to study the lives of Korean school teachers in various countries around the world.
