제주해녀의 주체성과 제주해녀항일운동

국문 초록

여성운동가 콜론타이가 여성의 주체성은 경제적 독립을 기반으로 형성되는 것이라고 지적했던 것처럼 제주여성들 역시 어릴 때부터 해녀라는 직업을 통해 경제적 활동을 전개하는 과정에서 자신의 정체성과 주체성을 갖게 되었던 것으로 보인다. 이런 맥락에서 볼 때, 제주해녀들의 직업의식과 항일의식이 결합되어 표출된 1932년 제주해녀조합사건은 제주여성의 정체성을 잘 드러냈던 사건이라 할 수 있겠다. 당시 제주해녀들은 일본 제국주의의 경제구조 속에서 자신들이 채취한 해산물에 대한 권리를 확보하지 못한 채, 생산물에 대한 권리를 해녀조합과 해조상, 또는 객주들에게 양도할 수밖에 없는 상황에 놓여있었다. 이 상황을 극복하기 위하여 자신들의 목소리를 냈던 사건이 바로 제주해녀조합사건이다. 이는 일제가 저지른 식민지 수탈의 부당성과 남성 객주들의 착취를 백일하에 폭로시켰던 항일투쟁이기도 했다. 이와 같이 제주해녀조합사건은 당시의 정치·경제·사회구조가 복합적이었던 만큼 다양한 의미를 내포하는 사건이었다. 여성들이 주체가 되었던 한국 최초, 최대의 운동이었다는 것과 동시에 일제의 수탈에 맞서 항거했던 민족사적 쾌거였고, 나아가 해녀라는 직업적 집단의 노동운동이기도 했다. 일제의 경제적 수탈과 더불어 성차별, 지역차별, 직업차별에 대한 한국여성의 저항운동이었다. 따라서 제주해녀의 기원과 사회적 경제적 의미를 분석함으로써 그동안 세간에 잘 알려지지 않았던 한국여성의 주체적인 삶의 일면을 소개하고, 제주해녀조합사건을 통해 제주해녀의 직업의식과 역사의식을 토대로 한 한국여성의 정체성을 재평가하고자 한다.

영문 초록

As a woman's activist, Kollontai, once pointed out that the identity of woman forms on the basis of economic independence, the women in Jeju seem to have the identity and independence during the process of undertaking their economic activities through the occupation as female divers since they were very young. Looking in this context, the professionalism and anti-Japanese consciousness were combined and expressed in the 1932 Jeju Female Diver Union Incident that displayed well of the identity of Jeju women. At that time, the Jeju female divers could not secure any right on sea products that they collected under the economic structure of Japanese imperialism, and they were exposed to have their earnings taken away by the union of female divers, sea food merchants, or sole agent men. In order to overcome this situation, the incident that had known the voices of these female divers was the Jeju Female Diver Union Incident. This is a type of anti-Japanese struggle that exposed the unfairness of colonial tirade done by the Japanese imperialists and exploitation of ship owners who were mainly men. As such, the Jeju Female Diver Union Incident was an incident that implicate many meanings as the political, economic and social structure was in complicated form then. This was the historic event since it was the first and largest movement for the cause of women in Korea as well as the struggle against the exploitation of Japan at the time while it was a group labor movement by the occupational group as female divers. It was the resistance movement of Korean women against economic exploitation of Japan, gender discrimination, regional discrimination and occupational discrimination. Therefore, by analyzing the origin of its history and social and economic implication of Jeju female divers, the subjective life of Korea women that have yet to be fully displayed is introduced and re-evaluate the identity of Korean women on the basis of occupational consciousness and perception of history for Jeju female divers through the Jeju Female Diver Union Incident.
