일본군 ‘위안부’ 목소리의 복화술적 재현

국문 초록

최근의 동시대 다큐멘터리는 위안부 피해생존자의 죽음 이후 ‘ ’ 이들을 어떻게 재현할 것인가에 대한 논의들을 촉발시키고 있다. 더 이상 증언할 수 있는 이들이 없는 근미래적 상황을 예비하며, 죽음 이후를 어떻게 기억할 것인가에 대한 보다 본격적인 재현 작업이 이루어지고 있는 것이다. 특히, 이 과정에서 이들의 말을 대신 전하는 화자들, 즉 복화술의 목소리가 등장하고 있다. 본고는 다큐멘터리 <김복동>과 <보드랍게>를 중심으로 '위안부' 피해생존자를 재현/대변하는 복화술의 목소리에 관해 다룬다. 두 다큐멘터리는 모두 영화의 중심인물의 사후에 제작된 다큐멘터리로, ‘위안부’ 피해생존자의 생존 촬영 영상에 애니메이션, 사진 자료, 활동가들의 인터뷰 등을 더해 만들어 졌다. 특히 ‘위안부’ 피해생존자가 더이상 카메라 앞에서 자신의 목소리를 낼 수 없는 상황에서 두 영화는 ‘위안부’ 피해생존자의 마음을 대변하거나 혹은 생전 증언을 대독하는 타인의 목소리를 빌려온다. 본고는 이러한 ‘복화술의 목소리’ 전략이 각 다큐멘터리에서 어떻게 작용하는지를 비판적으로 검토하고자 한다. 특히, 이미지와 사운드의 안전한 결합을 통해서 작동하는 영화적 환영은 다큐멘터리 속 ‘위안부’ 피해생존자의 이미지 위에 덧입혀지는 타인의 목소리를 더욱 복잡하게 만든다. 이에 따라 ‘위안부’ 피해생존자의 재현에 있어 복화술의 목소리의 사용은 단성적/다성적 서사의 가능성을 재검하도록 요청한다.

영문 초록

Recently, Korean documentaries have raised questions about how to represent the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ after their death. Preparing for a near-future where there are no more people who can testify, a more full-pledged representation of how to remember their afterlife is being carried out. As the result, those who speak for the ‘comfort women’, that is, the voice of ventriloquism, are emerging. This article deals with the voices of ventriloquism that represent and speak for the ‘comfort women’ through two Korean documentaries, My Name Is Kim Bok-Dong (2019, Song Won-geun) and Comfort (2020, Park Moon-chil). Both documentaries were made after the death of main character by adding animation, photo materials, and interview with activists to the videos of the main characters taken when they were alive. In particular, both documentaries borrows the ventriloquist voice speaking for the thoughts of ‘comfort women’ or reading the women’s testimonies because the women cannot give her own voice in front of camera. This article examines how the strategy of ventriloquism is used in each documentary. In particular, the cinematic illusion, which is operated by the safe combination of images and sounds, further complicates the voice of others overlaid on the images of ‘comfort women’ in documentaries. Accordingly, the use of ventriloquist voice in the representation of the ‘comfort women’ requires us to reexamine the possibility of various narratives of the ‘comfort women’.
