국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 한국과 일본의 장수기업을 상호 비교분석하여 특징을 도출하고 한국이 얻을 수 있는 시사점을 찾는 것이다. 분석한 결과, 첫째 한ㆍ일 모두 공통적으로 고객과의 신뢰가 최우선이라는 점에는 이견이 없어 보인다. 성장의 발판을 마련하게 협력해 준 지역주민은 물론 주변의 협력기업과의 공생관계를 깊이 인식하고 신뢰를 구축해 나가는 것이 무엇보다 중요했다. 둘째는 본업을 중시하는 것을 들 수 있다. 장수기업 대부분은 시장을 새롭게 개척하거나 제품을 새롭게 출시할 때, 기존의 제품과 서비스에서 크게 벗어나는 일이 많지 않다. 셋째는 끊임없는 진화를 꼽을 수 있다. 제품의 라이프사이클이 끝났다고 포기하는 것이 아니라 새로운 생명력을 불어넣어 예술품으로 승화시키는 노력을 아끼지 않는다. 한편, 한국의 장수기업에서 나타나는 특징으로는 이와 같은 요인 이외에 상대적으로 기술력을 꼽은 기업이 적지 않다. 또한 일본의 장수기업에서 나타나는 특징을 알아보기 위해 실시한 설문조사 결과에서는 장기간에 걸쳐 진행되는 실적 관리와 기술개발에 대한 응답 비중이 높게 나타나면서, 일본 기업이 장수하는 경우가 많은 이유를 분명하게 알 수 있었다. 또한 장기간에 걸쳐 축적된 산업기술력이 일본 기업의 경쟁력이라고 보는 견해가 매우 강하게 나타나고 있어, 이 역시 일본의 장수기업 비결이 오랜 기간 동안 쌓아올린 사내의 기술력에 바탕을 두고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of the present study is to compare and analyze Korean and Japanese long-lived companies in order to determine their characteristic traits and acquire implications for Korea’s industry. The results of the analysis, at its forefront, point to the trust between the customers and the companies in both countries. It was crucial that trust is established, based on the recognition of the important role played by the local communities and the cooperating companies. The next shared characteristic was that the companies mainly focused on their primary product. Most long-lived companies remained within the realms of their initial market when introducing and developing new products. Another trait was seen to be the ever continuing evolution. The companies were actively engaged in their creative efforts to breathe in new life into products that were regarded as outdated and no longer relevant. In addition to the mentioned characteristics, a few Korean companies indicated that technical skills were one important factor for a company’s successful survival. Furthermore, the results of the survey of the Japanese companies suggested that the long-term performance management and development of technology were seen as important factors with regards to the prosperous longevity of a company. In sum, the secret to the longevity of the long-lived Japanese companies was found to be primarily dependent on the accumulation of in-company technology and know-how in their area of expertise over the years.
