국문 초록

국립현대미술관의 특징과 세계화의 변화에 대해 알아보기 위해 1971년부터 2020년까지 소장품 작가들의 수를 파악, 그것을 국내외로 나누고 해외 작가들을 다시 출신 국가별로 분류하였다. 그 결과 50년간 누적된 작가 수는 8,748명이며, 그중91%가 국내 출신으로 해외 작가 수가 절대적으로 낮다. 게다가 이들 대부분 낮은국제적 인지도를 보여준다. 해외 작가들의 국적을 살펴보면 미국, 프랑스, 독일, 영국과 같은 서구권 출신이 주를 이루고 있지만, 80년대까지 일본 작가들의 비율 역시 상대적으로 높다. 저조한 세계화 실적에도 불구하고 80년대부터 서서히 몇몇 해외 주요 작가들의 작품이 수집되었다. 그리고 한국 근·현대미술의 흐름을 반영하는 작품들이 70년대부터 꾸준히 수집되었다는 긍정적 측면도 있다. 그런데도 전반적으로 국립현대미술관 소장품은 양적, 질적 문제와 함께 해외 작가에 대한 낮은관심을 드러낸다. 소장품의 세계화를 위해 향후 국립현대미술관은 예산, 전문 인력보강은 물론, 사회적으로 소장품에 대한 중요성 교육이 필요해 보인다. 그리고 국적보다는 국제미술무대의 흐름을 반영하는 작품 수집 정책과 이에 대한 실천이 요청된다. 이처럼 본 논문의 의의와 목적은 ‘소장품’이라는 키워드를 통해 한국 미술의 흐름을 살펴보고 이를 통해 세계화의 담론을 발전시키는 데 있다.

영문 초록

To study the development of globalism at the MMCA, this paper analyses the museum s collections from 1971 to 2020 and categorizes the artists it has collected as domestic or international according to their country of origin. In doing so, it finds that 91% of the 8,748 artists collected at the MMCA are from Korea. Moreover, most of the international artists are ones who have received limited global recognition. In regard to nationality, Western countries such as the US, France, Germany, and the UK are prominent, while the visibility of Japanese artists was also significant until the 1980s. Despite the museum s lack of attention to globalism, it has gradually collected the works of several major international artists since the 1980s. In addition, it has collected a number of historical Korean artists since 1970. The MMCA’s acquisitions have, in the end, displayed limited interest in internationalization in quantitative and qualitative terms. Furthermore, the MMCA needs to bolster its budget, professional manpower, and social education programs in the future, with a focus on the aesthetic and historical importance of the artwork it collects, and develop in its acquisition politics an international aesthetic approach and a global system rather than an ethnocentric one. The importance of this paper can be found in its original approach to the question of globalism through the analysis of data related to museum collections.
