개에 대한 認識과 文學的 形象

국문 초록

개는 신화 속에서 충성과 심부름꾼으로 나타나며 무속 신화에서는 저승에서 이승으로 가는 길을 안내하는 안내자 역할을 하는 동물로 묘사되어 있다. 또한 예부터 개는 집지키기, 사냥, 맹인 안내, 수호신 등의 역할 뿐만 아니라 잡귀와 병 도깨비, 요귀 등에서 재앙을 물리치고 집안의 행복을 지키는 능력이 있다고 전해진다. 본고는 개를 문학적으로 형상한 자료를 통해 문인들의 개에 대한 기본적인 인식과 그 전환을 살펴보았다. 개는 사람과 가장 가까운 곳에 있으면서 다양한 장르의 문학적 소재로 사용되었지만 이에 대한 면밀한 고찰은 그다지 많지 않다. 개에 대한 일반적인 인식은 비천함, 충성과 의리 등인데 문인들이 개와 관련하여 남긴 글들에는 주로 비천함과 무지함으로 표현되었다. 이러한 비천하고 무지한 동물인 개가 사람도 하기 어려운 주인에 대한 충성과 의리를 행하고 효를 다했을 때 독자에게 주는 감동은 배가된다고 할 수 있다. 이를 위해 충의를 실천한 개 이야기 3편과 효성을 다한 개 이야기 2편을 고찰하여 비천하고 무지함으로 인식되었던 개가 아주 특별한 경우이기는 하지만 의리와 효를 행한 뒤 지혜와 의리가 있으며 사람을 부끄럽게 할 만하고, 성이 선하고 하늘에서 품부 받은 것이 인간과 같음, 사람보다 나음, 은혜에 대한 의리를 지키는 동물로 인식이 바뀌고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 의구와 효구에 대한 글을 남긴 작자들은 개의 훌륭한 행동을 이야기함으로써 세태가 각박해지며 인간으로 인간답지 못한 행동을 하였을 때 사람과 비교하여 이를 경계하는 자료로 삼았던 것이다.

영문 초록

The dog appears as a loyal being and a messenger in myths, and in shamanic myths it is described as an animal playing the role of a guide who leads through the way from the other world to this world. Since ancient times, moreover, the dog has been known to play the roles of housekeeper, hunter, guide for the blind, and guardian, and to have abilities to defeat disasters and keep the happiness of home from sundry evil spirits, disease goblins, and wicked ghosts. This study examined literary men’s basic perceptions of a dog and the development of such perceptions through materials that configured a dog into a literary image. The dog lived around people and was used as a material of literature in various genres, but there have not been many relevant studies. The general perception of a dog is lowliness, loyalty, faithfulness, etc., but in articles written by literary men with regard to a dog, it was usually expressed to be lowly and ignorant. When a dog as such a lowly and ignorant animal is loyal and faithful to its master even more than a human servant is, it is more touching to the readers. Thus, this study reviewed three stories about dogs that practiced loyalty and two about dogs that fulfilled the filial duty, and found that a dog had been regarded as lowly and ignorant, but after some dogs, though special cases, practiced loyalty and filial duty, people’s perception of a dog was changed and it was regarded as an animal whose nature is good and whose character given by heaven is human‐like, better than human character, and faithful to grace. By telling dogs’ admirable acts, writers who left articles on righteous and obedient dogs used the stories to criticize the hardhearted generation and give a warning to people for their inhumane behaviors.
