Can Trade Unions Promote Corporate Social Responsibility?

국문 초록

그동안 많은 연구가 기업의 사회적 책임과 기업성과 간의 관계에 주목해 왔지만 그 관계에서 노동조합이 어떤 역할을 할 수 있는지에 대해선 연구가 부족하였다. 다만 기업의 사회적 책임이 환경과 공동체에 대한 책임과 함께 직원들에 대한 내부적 책임을 포함하고 있기 때문에, 대체로 노동조합이 기업의 사회적 책임과 경쟁하는 개념일 것으로 이해되어 왔다. 본 연구 역시 이해관계자 관점을 바탕으로 유노조 사업장에서 노동조합은 기업의 경제적 성과만이 아니라 기업의 사회적 책임활동에도 적지 않은 영향을 미칠 것으로 예상하였다. 그러나 본 연구가 이전와 연구와 차별적인 부분은 노동조합이 제도적 압력을 통해 기업의 사회적 성과를 높이고 이를 통해 경제적 성과를 창출할 수 있음에 주목한 것이다. 구체적으로, 기업의 사회적 책임과 기업성과 간의 관계에서 노동조합의 조절적 역할을 가설화하였다. 601개의 제조업을 대상으로 한 분석결과, 기업의 사회적 책임은 기업의 경제적 성과와 정(+)의 관계를 가지며 이러한 관계는 노동조합이 조직된 사업장에서 더욱 강화되는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 이론적 시사점은 기업의 사회적 책임 맥락에서 노동조합의 역할을 새롭게 조명한 것으로, 노동조합이 기업이 사회적 책임을 수행하는 데 있어 경쟁이 아닌 지원적 역할을 할 수 있음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

Although many studies have focused on the relationship between corporate social responsibility and corporate performance, discussions on the role of trade unions have been very limited. Based on the stakeholder perspective, this study predicted that the union would have a significant impact not only on the economic performance of a company, but also on its social responsibility activities. Although corporate social responsibility includes internal responsibilities to employees as well as environmental and community responsibilities, union priorities have frequently been understood as in competition with corporate social responsibility. Unlike this previous assumption, this study focused on the influence of trade unions in increasing corporate social performance through institutional pressure, which also affects economic performance. Specifically, we hypothesized a moderating role of the union in the relationship between corporate social responsibility and corporate financial performance. The results of our analysis of 601 firms in manufacturing industries indicated that corporate social responsibility has a positive relationship with corporate economic performance, and this relationship is stronger in workplaces where labor unions are organized. The results of this study shed new light on the role of trade unions in the context of corporate social responsibility, and have theoretical implications about how trade unions and corporate social responsibility can play complementary roles rather than competing.
