융의 종교심리학에 나타난 종교의 역할과 치유적 기능

국문 초록

현금의 한국교회는 다양하고도 심각한 위기를 경험하고 있다. 다양한 위기 요인 중에 가장 두드러지는 내적 위기는 선교 초기 이래 지속되어 오던 신앙적 헌신과 열정이 쇠퇴하고 제도화, 형식화, 습관화 경향이 점점 가속화되고 있다는 것이다. “하나님의 현현이 떠난 곳에 인간의 종교가 시작된다”는 미르치아 엘리아데의 경구를 다시금 되새겨야 할 상황이 눈앞에서 다양한 모습으로 전개된다. 이러한 상황 속에서 다음과 같은 질문은 매우 중요한 의미를 가진다. “신 체험에 대한 관심과 열망은 어디에서 오는가”, “하나님 체험은 어떤 경로를 통해 이루어지는가?”, “종교와 신앙심은 인간 성숙과 성장을 위해 어떤 역할과 기능을 수행하는가?” 이러한 질문에 대해 통찰력 있는 답을 줄 수 있는 학자 중에 칼 융이 있다. 칼 융은 정신의학자인 동시에 종교와 관련한 수많은 임상과 학문적 깊이를 겸비한 종교심리학자이기 때문이다. 본 연구는 융의 종교에 관한 이해를 중심으로 종교의 역할과 치유적 기능에 대해 깊이 성찰한다. 또한 융의 종교 이해의 타당성 여부를 기독교적 관점에서 고찰한 후에, 이러한 연구가 기독교교육에 어떠한 함의와 공헌을 제공할 수 있는가를 집중적으로 살펴본다. 구체적 예로서 다음과 같은 점들을 강조한다. 입체적이고 실제적인 교육목회의 기본틀 마련, 상징을 활용하는 기독교교육, 체험신앙을 존중하는 기독교교육, 무의식의 심층 차원을 포괄하는 기독교교육, 개성화의 역동성을 활용하는 기독교교육 등이 그것이다. 프로이드는 종교를 유아기적 퇴행으로, 병리적, 환원적으로 해석하였다. 한편, 융은 종교를 인간으로 하여금 개성화와 우주적 합일을 향해 나아가도록 도와주며 성숙과 성장을 위해 없어서는 안 될 중요한 상징체계로 이해하였다. 기독교적 진리주장과는 차이와 간극이 존재하지만, 융의 종교심리 이해가 가진 순기능을 활용함으로써 위기에 놓인 한국교회와 기독교교육 현장에 새로운 활력을 불어넣을 수 있는 방안을 이론적으로 성찰하는 것은 중요한 시도라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The Korean church is currently experiencing a state of total crisis. Among various issues, a certain inner factor stands out: the con-spicuous decline of passion and commitment to the Christian faith. Because of this decline, institutionalization and habituation within the Korean church are being accelerated. In this situation, the following questions retain significant meaning: “Where do the attention and as-piration for the experience of God come from?”, “Through what kind of channels does the experience of God come into being?” and “What kind of roles and functions do religion and religiosity play?” The work of Carl G. Jung, a religious psychologist with abundant clinical and academic experience, suggests answers to some of these questions. Based upon his rationale, an investigation needs to be undertaken re-garding the role and therapeutic function of religion in Jung’s Religious Psychology. In addition, the validity of Jung’s under-standing of religion needs to be evaluated from a Christian perspective. These attempts are geared towards the formulation of helpful implications for Christian education. First, more stereoscopic and experiential approaches to educational ministry are needed. Second, active utilization of religious symbols will enhance the effi-ciency of Christian education. Third, recognition and respect for the experiences of God will make Christian educational practices more dynamic and vivid. Fourth, the inclusion of a deeper level of uncon-sciousness as well as consciousness will render Christian education more holistic and complete. Jung interprets religion in a constructive and positive manner, to the extent that he contends that without reli-gion it is almost impossible for humanity to move towards mature in-dividuation and cosmic wholeness. Of course, there reside gaps and disparities within Jung’s understanding of religion, including Christianity and Christian claims. However, when we employ dis-creetly the insights and profound ideas of Jung such as archetypes, in-dividuation, and wholeness, we can make a significant contribution to Christian education within the Korean church.
