완판 84장본 <열녀춘향수절가>의 개작 및 향유 맥락과 주제 의식 재고찰

국문 초록

본고는 완판 84장본 〈열녀춘향수절가〉가 1890년대 중반부터 1900년대 중반까지 호남 지역의 사회·역사적 상황을 반영하는 지점에 주목하여, 국권 침탈기 호남 민중의 항일 의식이 84장본 개작과 향유의 한 요인으로 작용하였을 가능성을 탐색해 보았다. 84장본의 변모는 춘향의 영웅적 면모를 통하여 이전의 완판본들에서부터 이어져 온 민중의 반봉건 투쟁을 부각할 뿐 아니라, 19세기 말과 20세기 초에 걸쳐 본격화된 일제의 국권 침탈에 대한 호남 지역의 대응 양상 또한 간접적으로 반영하고 있다는 것이 본고의 관점이다. 1890년대 중반부터 1900년대 중반까지의 시기는 갑오개혁과 을미사변, 을사조약을 거치면서 일제의 국권 침탈이 본격화된 시기이며, 춘향전의 배경을 이루는 남원 일대에서는 의병을 중심으로 한 항일 항쟁이 활기를 띠었다. 84장본은 이러한 사회·역사적 맥락을 반영하여 개작되었고, 이후 1900년대 후반 호남 지역의 항일 항쟁이 고조되면서 지속적인 호응을 얻으며 향유 기반을 넓혀 갔으리라고 볼 수 있다. 완판 선행본들 및 장재백 창본과 비교해 볼 때, 84장본은 이들의 영향을 받는 동시에 19세기 말부터 20세기 초까지 호남의 시대 상황을 반영하는 독특한 개작 양상을 나타낸다. 이전의 판본들이나 판소리와는 달리 춘향을 임진왜란 당시의 애국적 인물들과 동일시하는 대목들이 새롭게 등장하며, 변학도에 대한 춘향의 발언에서도 국가 의식이 부각되는 것이다. 춘향 모녀와 향리들 사이의 신뢰 관계가 강화된 점 또한 친일 성향의 지방관들과 맞서 연대하였던 남원 민중의 항쟁 경험을 일정하게 반영한다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 점들로 미루어볼 때 84장본의 이념 지향적 변모는 단지 봉건적 신분 질서에 대한 저항의 산물만은 아니며, 20세기 초 급격히 진행되었던 국권 침탈에 대한 호남 민중의 비판적 인식 또한 반영하고 있음을 추론할 수 있다. 아울러 84장본이 발간 후 인기를 얻고 널리 향유될 수 있었던 데에도, 의병 운동을 중심으로 한 호남 지역의 항일 항쟁이 1900년대 후반까지 지속적으로 고조되었던 점을 한 요인으로 고려해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on the social and historical contexts of the Honam area in the mid to late 1900s and explores the possibility that the anti- Japanese sentiment of the Honam people, during the Japanese invasion of their national sovereignty, acted as a factor in the revision of the 84- jang YulnyeoChunhyangsujeolga(烈女春香守節歌). Besides highlighting the anti-feudal struggle, the transformation of the 84-jang version additionally reflects the response of the Honam people to the invasion of Japanese imperialism in the early 20th century. During the late 19th to the early 20th century, the Japanese invasion of the national sovereignty of the Korean Empire began with the Gabo Reform, the Eulmi Incident, and the Eulsa Treaty. In Namwon, which forms the background of Chunhyangjeon, the anti-Japanese uprising centered on the voluntary army’s continued action. In the mid to late 1900s, Honam was the most active region for anti-Japanese uprisings. Based on this, beyond the hierarchy, ethnic solidarity was strengthened, and pro-Japanese reforms that were enforced by the central cabinet through local officials were resisted. The figures of the 84-jang edition differ from those of the earlier editions, although it was established through the influence of the earlier versions, such as the 33-jang edition and Kim Sejong-Jang Jaebaek pansori series. Unlike previous editions and pansori, the 84-jang edition has new lines identifying Chunhyang with patriotic figures during the Japanese invasion of Imjinwaeran(壬辰倭亂), and the national consciousness is emphasized in Chunhyang’s remarks against Byeon Hakdo. In addition, the strengthening of trust between Chunhyang and Hyangri(鄕吏) reflects the experiences of the Namwon people who were united against pro-Japanese local officials. In conclusion, it is possible to infer that the ideological transformation of the 84-jang Yeolnyeochunhyangsujeolga was not only a reflection of resistance to the feudal order, but a result from critical perception of the Honam people towards the rapid invasion of their national sovereignty in the 1900’s.
