국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 아들러 독서교육론의 인식론적 토대를 찾아내고, 그것이 그가 강조한 독서교육의 실제에 끼친 영향을 밝히는 것이다. 아들러의 인식론은 다음과 같은 특징을 지닌다. 첫째, 여타의 동물들과 구분되는 인간의 본질적 특성은 바로 지성이며, 지성은 인지적 작용뿐만 아니라 감각지각에 영향을 미친다. 실재는 지성과 감각지각의 협력적 작용을 통해 파악되는 것이나, 지성은 감각지각을 증폭시키며, 나아가 추상적이고 개념적인 사유를 가능하게 한다는 점에서 지성의 작용이 더욱 중요하다. 둘째, 아이디어는 지성에 의해 직접적으로 파악되는 것이 아니라 오직 간접적으로 이해될 수 있다. 감각지각은 가시적 대상을 직접적으로 파악하는 반면에, 아이디어는 오직 사고의 대상에 의존하여 간접적으로 이해될 수 있는 것이다. 셋째, 지식의 진리성은 실재와의 정합성에 의존함에도 불구하고, 우리가 파악할 수 있는 지식은 결코 완전한 의미의 에피스테메가 아니라 단지 검증된 의견에 지나지 않는다. 따라서 경험적 근거를 지니지를 않았다는 점에서 모든 철학적 지식을 부정하는 실증주의자들의 주장은 결코 받아들여질 수 없다. 철학적 지식은 문제의 본질을 파악하고, 적절한 해결 방안을 찾을 수 있는 지혜를 가져다준다는 점에서 과학적 지식보다 더욱 강조될 필요가 있다. 이러한 그의 인식론을 토대로, 아들러는 12년간의 단선형 공교육 독서 프로그램인 파이데이아 프로그램을 제안하고, 성인들이 위대한 저서와 인문학 독서에 계속적으로 참여해야 하며, 나아가 독서교육이 위대한 아이디어들에 대하여 토론함으로써 철학적으로 사유하는 인간을 양성해야 한다고 강조한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to find the epistemological foundations of Adler s reading education theory and to reveal its impact on the practice of reading education. Adler s epistemology is as follows. First, the nature of human lies in Intellect , which affects sense-perception as well as cognitive power. The reality is apprehended by the cooperative action of Intellect and sense-perception, But the action of Intellect is more important because it amplifies sensory perception and further enables conceptual thought. Secondly, ideas can only be understood by Intellect indirectly. While sense-perception apprehends the object directly, ideas can only be understood indirectly as the object of thought. Thirdly, the knowledge we can apprehend is never be an episteme , but merely a verified opinion. So, the assertion of the positivists who deny every philosophical knowledge is never acceptable in that it does not have empirical evidence. Philosophical knowledge needs to be emphasized more than scientific knowledge because it brings wisdom to grasp the core of the problem and find its solutions. His epistemology had revealed the following effect on the practice of his reading education. First, he proposed The Paideia Program as reading education for every child. Secondly, he emphasize everyone should study great books and humanities. Thirdly, he emphasizes discussing the great ideas. Based on his epistemology, Adler requires that every human should participate in reading and discussing of the great ideas until the end of his or her life.
