국문 초록

이 연구에서는 심리어휘부 관련 연구 주제를 심리적 실재성을 강조하면서 탐구한 연구들을 살펴보고 성과와 의의, 한계와 과제에 대해 논의한다. 심리어휘부 연구 중에는 연구 결과를 도출할 때 이론과 머릿속 언어 지식의 일치 여부를 고려해야 한다고 보는 연구들이 있다. 이 연구들의 ‘실제’에 대한 강조의 배경, 주장과 논증 구조, 근거 자료 수집 방법 등을 정리하고 연구가 밝힌 바, 이러한 연구의 가치, 보완해야 할 점, 나아갈 방향에 대해 생각해 본다. 국어 형태론의 서로 다른 이론들이 논쟁하는 과정에서 어휘부에 대한 본격적 탐구가 필요해지면서 심리적 실재성을 강조하는 연구 흐름이 생겨났고, 조어 기제와 어휘부 양상의 심리적 실재성을 증명하기 위한 여러 시도들이 있었다. 탐구 대상의 성격상 어휘부와 관련된 주장은 치밀하게 논증하기가 매우 어렵다. 근거 마련의 어려움에 대한 타개책으로 생각된 것이 실험심리학적 연구를 통한 실제적 증거 수집 및 인지 체계 전반에서의 근거 확인이라는 연구 방법론적 지향이다. 어휘부 연구들이 근거를 다방면으로 모색한 결과 심리어휘부에 대한 주장들에 국어학적 사실에 대한 논증으로서의 가치를 점차 더 많이 부여할 수 있게 되었고 근거 마련 방식도 다양해졌다. 쟁점이 되는 문제들을 해결할 구체적인 방법을 고안하는 것, 자료 수집 방법을 정교화하고 자료를 대표성 있게 하는 것 등은 과제로 남는다.

영문 초록

This paper focused on the research on mental lexicon by emphasizing psychological reality and discussed its findings, implications, limitations, and future research directions. Some studies on mental lexicon argue that it is necessary to consider whether “the research findings have theorized the speaker’s linguistic knowledge to be close to reality” in the argumentation process. This paper examined how such research came to emphasize the “reality”, as well as its argumentation structure and methods of collecting evidence. This paper further analyzed the accomplishments, implications, limitations, and future research directions of such studies. The research trend on psychological reality arose in the process of debating multiple theories of Korean morphology, as a full-fledged examination of the lexicon became necessary. The subject’s characteristics have made it difficult to acknowledge the discourses on the lexicon as argumentations of linguistic facts. Arguments on the lexicon are notoriously difficult to prove by meticulously presenting arguments that can be supported or disproved. What was considered as a countermeasure to this situation was the methodological orientation of interest in the overall cognitive system and the collection of actual evidence through experimental psychological research. As the researchers sought evidence for lexicon research through various ways, the arguments on mental lexicon began to carry weight as arguments on linguistic facts and more ways to collect evidence were devised. Data collected through various ways will contribute to gaining a more in-depth understanding and providing systematic explanations to linguistic phenomena. A few challenges remain for future research, such as elaborating the evidence collecting methods, making the data more representative, and reducing the possibility of varying interpretations by reinforcing the evidence. Future researchers should also consider being more imaginative in presenting theoretical models that form the basis for experimental research.
