마르셀 뒤샹의 작품에 나타난 작가의 자아 이미지에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 논문은 현대미술에 있어 가장 영향력 있는 작가인 마르셀 뒤샹(Marcel Duchamp)의 작품 형성 과정에 있어 개인의 생애 배경을 통한 그의 능력과 자질이 어떻게 발현되었고, 그의 자아 이미지가 작품에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는가에 대한 연구이다. 본 연구의 범위와 방법은 뒤샹의 자아 이미지 형성 배경을 탄생에서 타계까지의 생애를 주요 사건 중심으로 기술하면서 사건이 일어난 시대적 배경을 함께 다루었다. 뒤샹의 작품 중 주요 작품인 자전거 바퀴, 샘, 큰 유리, 에탕도네를 선정하여 본 연구의 분석 틀을 이용하여 작품에 나타난 뒤샹의 자아 이미지를 분석하였고, 다음과 같은 결론에 도달하였다. <자전거 바퀴>와 <샘>에서는 시대적 사회 배경에 불만이 생기게 되고, 미술계 유파로부터의 반발로 비롯되어 갈등이 생기게 되었으나 좌절보다는 오히려 독립심을 강화시켜 개인 환경의 변화 뜻이 생기게 되고, 자신의 자아 정체성이 잘 드러난 ‘레디메이드’라는 새로운 예술세계를 만들어냈다는 것을 알 수 있었다. <큰 유리>와 <에탕도네>에서 시대적 사회 배경은 전쟁 종전으로 뉴욕에서 생활하며 현장의 수문장으로서 활동한 뒤샹은 자아의 난해한 주석들이 존재하는 점 때문에 다양한 해석들이 존재하였다. 개인 환경은 계속 부정과 실험정신을 표현하면서 전통적인 개념의 순수 미술 역사를 흔들어 놓고자 했고 작품을 완성하는 것은 결국 관객의 해석이라는 자신의 자아 신념을 잘 나타난 작품들이라고 분석할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 직접 연구하고 분석하는 데 있어 다음과 같은 제한점을 가진다. 첫째, 작품 기간의 선정기준이 모호하여 뒤샹의 작가 심리가 중복되는 경향이 있어 분석의 어려움이 있었다. 둘째, 본 연구의 분석 틀로는 뒤샹의 자아 이미지를 정확하게 분석하는데 한계점이 있었다. 셋째, 본 연구는 뒤샹의 작품으로만 자아 이미지를 분석하는데 한계점이 있었다. 이러한 한계점을 보완하면 보다 정확하게 뒤샹의 자아 이미지를 분석할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study attempted to investigate how skills and abilities of Marcel Duchamp, the most influential artist in contemporary art, developed throughout his life and analyze the influence of his self-images on art works. In terms of research scope and method, the background of his self-images was described, focusing on significan events in his life from birth to death, and a historical background for such events was examined. Among his works, Bicycle Wheel, Fountain, the Large Glass and Etant Donnes were chosen, and his self-images in these pieces were analyzed using an analysis tool. The results found the following: In Bicycle Wheel and Fountain, complaints about historical and social backgrounds were formed. Even though a backlash from the schools of art caused a conflict, it rather reinforced the spirit of independence, bringing changes in personal environments. In fact, it even opened a new art world named ‘Readymade,’ which well expressed his ego-identity. In the Large Glass and Etant Donnes, there were diverse interpretations of their historical and social backgrounds because of Duchamp’s, who worked in New York after the end of the war, arcane comments. In terms of personal environments, there was an attempt to reform the history of traditional fine art through continuous expression of denial and an experimental spirit. After all, these pieces well expressed his belief that ‘artwork is completed by the audience’s interpretation’. This study does have the following limitations: ⅰ) Since the selection criteria for the period of artworks were not clear, Marcel Duchamp’s mental states overlapped, making it hard to analyze. ⅱ) The analysis tool used in this study was not adequate to precisely analyze his self-images. ⅲ) This study examined Marcel Duchamp’s artwork only in analyzing self-images. It is anticipated that Marcel Duchamp’s self-images could be analyzed more accurately once such limitations are overcome.
