조선시대 왕의 인상학으로 보는 성격·이미지 분석에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 얼굴 인상은 타고 난다기보다는 살아가면서 행동이나 생각, 사회적, 시대적 배경에 의해서 만들어진다는 사실을, 조선왕조 연산군에 대하여 인상학을 기준으로 휴먼이미지연구를 통해서 변화되는 과정을 연구하는 것이다. 노인의 얼굴을 보면 삶의 흔적이 고스란히 나타난다. 얼굴에는 인생이 있고, 과거와 미래가 있는 듯하다. 조선왕조 10대 왕으로 폭군이 된 연산군, 그가 무참히 무너져 내린 이유는 무엇인지, 어떻게 폭군이 되어 쫓겨나게 되었는지를 『조선왕조실록』의 가족사와 시대적 배경을 살펴보았다. 인상학을 중심으로 행동이나 생각, 사회적, 시대적 배경을 바탕으로 이미지 연구를 하는 과정에서 보니, 연산군의 짧고 파란만장한 인생에서 생각과 행동이, 그의 무의식 속에서 본인의 이미지와 인상학은 점점 폭군으로 변화하게 되는 과정이 고스란히 얼굴에 담기게 되었다고 보인다. 무오사화(戊午士禍)나 갑자사화(甲子士禍)로 갑작스러운 충격적 소식으로 인해, 연산군이 폭군이 된 것이 아니라 왕권(王權)과 신권(臣權)의 오랜 충돌 과정이 누적되면서 일어난 사건들이다. 따라서 단순히 그의 광기(狂氣)가 폐위의 원인을 찾는 것은 실상과는 거리가 멀다고 볼 수 있다. 연산군은 왜 폐위되었는가! 어머니 문제로 분노 조절에 실패했고 대신과 대간을 한꺼번에 적으로 돌린 데 큰 원인이 있었다. 사리 분별의 출발이라고 할 수 있는 형세 판단을 그르쳤던 것이다. 위의 내용에서 보여지듯 인상학은 태어날 때부터 정해진 것이 아니라 살아가면서 생각과 행동과 처해 진 환경과 상황에 의해서 변화되고 만들어진다는 걸 알 수 있다. 인상은 마음과 행동의 거울이다. 그 포악함이 얼굴로 조금씩 덧붙기 시작했다. “연산의 얼굴은 쳐다보니 빛은 희고 수염은 적으며 키가 크고 눈에는 붉은 기운이 있었습니다.” 이덕형의 수필집 『주창한화(竹窓閑話)』에서 언급하였던 것처럼 연산군의 얼굴은 희고 호리호리한 외형으로 요즘으로 말할 것 같으면 꽃미남 같은 이미지이다. 귀티나던 얼굴은 포악하고, 무서움을 넘어서 광인처럼 느껴진다. 지금까지의 인상학과 이미지 연구, 조선시대의 시대적 배경 등으로 분석을 해 본 결과를 종합해 보면 그와 같은 시대를 살아보지는 않았지만, 지금에서는 상상할 수 없을 정도의 이슈 거리가 많다. 좋은 운명을 타고난들 지키지 못하고, 노력하지 않고서는 그 이상이 될 수 없음을 연구를 통해서 알게 되었다. 좋은 인상이란 본인이 좋은 생각과 언어, 생활, 행동에서 만들어지는 것을 연산군을 통해서 볼 수 있었던 것 같다. 상이란 본인의 생각과 행동으로 바뀔 수도 있으니 바른 생각과 선한 행동을 함으로써 바뀔 수도 있다는 점을 명심하며, 항상 본인이 주체가 되어서 자신의 운명을 능동적으로 살아가기 위해 힘써야 하겠다.

영문 초록

The aim of this study is to investigate the idea that facial impressions are not merely inherent but are formed by behavior, thought or social and historical backgrounds through studies of the human image, using the study of physiognomy on Yeonsangun (Prince Yeonsan) from the Joseon Dynasty. An elder’s face reveals the traces of time. It shows a person’s life, including the past and the future. This study was to determine why Yeonsangun, the 10th king of the Joseon Dynasty, became completely traumatized and ended up as a tyrant by analyzing his family history and historical background through joseonwangjosillok (the annals of the Joseon Dynasty). While examining behavior, thoughts and social and historical backgrounds based on physiognomy, joseonwangjosillok was reviewed. This study found that Yeonsangun’s thoughts and behavior were reflected on his face as he was unwittingly transforming into a tyrant little by little according to physiognomy. In fact, he became such a cruel ruler due to the long accumulation of clashes between monarch power and divine power, not because of a sudden shocking event such as Muo Sahwa (the first literati purge of 1498) or Gapja Sahwa (the massive second purge of 1504). Therefore, finding the cause of his insanity in his dethronement is a limited idea. What made the king step down from the throne? He failed to control his temper due to his mother issues and forced all daesin (minister) and daegan officials to become his enemies. In the end, he was wrong from the start of discretion, unable to correctly recognize situations. As described above, facial impressions are not fixed at birth. Instead, they are modified and formed by behavior, thoughts, environments and circumstances. Since a facial impression is a mirror of the mind and behavior, his cruelty started to appear on his face. Yeonsangun was thin with a white face just like a pop idol today. His once noble and elegant face turned into a ruthless and horrible face. According to the analysis of physiognomy, image studies and historical background of the Joseon period, there were many unimaginable issues to be surmounted. This study confirmed that even a person born with a good destiny may not be able to hold onto it without effort. The case of Yeonsangun proves that a good facial impression is formed by good thinking, language, lifestyle and behavior. In other words, as a facial impression can be altered by thoughts and behavior, good thinking and behavior could bring a good facial impression. Therefore, people need to be proactive in finding and defining their destiny.
