국문 초록

이 논문은 일본 근현대를 관통하여 민족혐오와 민족학살이 행해지는 과정에서 빠지지 않고 등장하는 ‘불령선인’이라는 용어에 집중하여, 일본어 신문미디어를 대상으로 조선(한국)인에 대한 부정적 표상과 그 주요한 표현인 ‘불령선인’ 담론의 형성 과정에 대해 검토한 것이다. 3·1운동 이전에 ‘불령’이라는 단어는 주로 범죄나 풍기질서를 어지럽히는 행위를 말했고 반드시 조선인만을 수식하는 것은 아니었다. 이 시기 일본 간행 신문들에서 ‘불령’은 주로 자국민과 외국인의 범죄나 풍기질서를 해치는 행위를 가리키는 것이었고, 조선 간행 신문 『경성일보』에서는 전자의 의미와 함께 배일 조선인이라는 두 가지 뜻으로 혼용되고 있었다. ‘불령선인’이라는 말이 만들어지고 일반에 확산되기 전에는 시대적 사건의 흐름을 따라 조선인을 무지몽매한 열등민족에서 폭력적인 민족으로, 더불어 반일·배일 세력에 대해서는 ‘폭도’로 표상하며 조선인에 대한 부정적 이미지를 형성하였다. 그러나 이 시기에는 아직 일본과 조선의 일본어 신문 모두 ‘불령선인’이라는 용어를 적극적으로 사용하고 있지는 않았다. 이후 3·1운동 보도를 통해 이전부터 형성되어온 조선인의 부정적, 폭력적 이미지가 극대화되었다. 3·1운동을 기점으로 일본어 신문미디어에서 ‘불령선인’이라는 말이 빈번히 등장하며, 주로 범죄나 질서를 어지럽히는 행위에 대해 사용되었던 ‘불령’이 일제에 항거하는 조선인을 지칭하는 용어로 변모한다. 각 신문에 따라 ‘불령선인’ 기사 보도량에 차이가 보이긴 하나 일본 간행 일본어 신문과 조선 간행 일본어 신문 모두 ‘불령선인’ 기사를 보도할 때는 이들의 폭력적 행위를 강조하여 부정적으로 묘사했고, 이로 인한 일본의 피해를 크게 보도함으로써 일본인들의 경계심과 불안을 조장했다. 이렇게 일본어 신문미디어를 통해 부정적 조선인 표상은 3·1운동 이후 ‘불령선인’이라는 하나의 대명사로 귀결되어 양식화하며 불령선인 담론을 형성하게 되었다.

영문 초록

This paper focuses on the term “Futei-Senjin” that appears in the course of ethnic hatred and genocide through the modern era of Japan and examines the process of forming a discourse on “Futei-Senjin” which is the negative representation and the primary expression of the Japanese newspaper media. Before the March First Independence Movement, the word “futei” was mainly used to refer to crimes or deeds of disturbing order of public morals, and it was not necessarily only for Koreans. The term “futei” in the Japanese newspapers during this period, it is used to refer mainly to the acts of crimes and disorderly conduct. Keijo-nippo, Japanese newspaper published in Joseon, used the term of both meanings as mentioned above and anti-Japanese forces. Before the word “Futei-Senjin” was coined and spread to the general public, Colonial Koreans were represented as violent people from an insipient inferior race. Further, it formed a negative image of Koreans; therefore, anti-Japanese forces were described as a mob of rioters. However, neither Japan nor the Japanese newspaper published in Korea at the time used the term “futei-senjin” actively yet. Since then, the negative and violent image of Colonial Koreans has been maximized through reports of the March First Independence Movement. Starting with the March First Independence Movement, the word “Futei-Senjin” frequently appeared in Japanese newspaper media. The term “futei”-which was used mainly for crimes and disorderly conduct-is transformed into a name referring to Koreans protesting against Imperial Japan. Although there are differences among the amount of articles reported in respective newspapers, both Japanese newpapers published in Japan and Japanese newspapers published in Korea portrayed the act of violence negatively and significantly reported the damages caused by Koreans, which encouraged the Japanese to be wary and anxious. Thus, the unfavorable representation of Colonial Koreans in the Japanese newspaper media resulted in the formation of a discourse called “Futei-Senjin,” which is stylized and concluded after the March First Independence Movement.
