국문 초록

대중음악의 역사 서술에서 쟁점은 연속성과 불연속성을 동시에 고려하는 시기구분의 문제, 나아가 대중음악사의 대상이 무엇인가라는 질문을 제기한 다. 대중음악이 악보, 음반, 무대를 비롯한 복합적 매개에 의해 구축된다는 점, 그 결과 대중음악의 텍스트가 종종 불확정적이라는 점은 그 역사를 서술할 때 난점으로 작동한다. ‘가요사’와 ‘명반론’으로 대표되는 기존의 두 가지 역사 서술은 상이한 시각, 상이한 동기, 상이한 취향에도 불구하고 ‘동질적 공간에서의 시간의 연속적 흐름’을 전제하고 있다. 그렇지만 대중음악이 생산 되고 순환되는 공간은 이질적 장소들로 구성되어 있고, 시간적 흐름은 단절과 불연속성을 내장한다. 특히 이 글의 초점인 1970～1980년대 한국 대중음악의 경우 급격한 시공간적 변환을 경험했기 때문에 (가요사의) 연대기적 기술이나 (명반론의) 통시적 비교 모두 한계를 드러낸다. 반면 ‘무대사’는 음악생산의 진정성(authenticity)을 구성하는 현장이자 제도로 기능해 왔지만 이에 대한 연구는 깊이 이루어지지 못하고 있다. 향후의 대안은 시공간의 분리와 통합의 복잡한 과정을 두텁게 기술하면서 대중음악의 ‘역사’ 못지않게 대중음악의 ‘지리’에 대한 조사와 연구를 수행하는 작업이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

One of the crucial issues of writing histories of popular music is that of periodization, which generated the object of the histories. The difficulties lies in the generic characteristics of popular music whose mediators are complex(e.g. score record, stage etc.) . It is often the case that the text of popular music in indeterminate. Two dominant writing of popular music can be dubbed as ‘history of popular song’ and ‘the discourse of canonical album’ respectively. Although the one is differed from other in terms of perspectives, motives, and tastes, it shares a concept of the continuous time flow in homogeneous space. But the space for the production and circulation of popular music is composed of heterogeneous places, and there exists discontinuity in time flow. Especially Korean popular music in the 1970～1980s, which is the focus of this paper, experienced the radical transformation of time-space, so that the chronological description in the former, and diachronic comparison in the latter, have serious limitations. Last but not the least, ‘the history of stage’ is not well explored in academic studies on popular music, while the stage has performed important role as ‘real field(hyeonjang)’ and institution that construct the authenticity for different genres/styles of popular music. An alternative can be sought at the thick description of complex process of the integration and separation of time-space through researching on geography, as well as history, of popular music in specific period.
