가천 이길여의 병원, 대학 설립과 기업가정신

국문 초록

길병원과 가천의과대학교의 설립자인 가천 이길여 박사는 국내에서 병원과 대학을 함께 세운 9명의 의사 가운데 유일한 여성이다. 서울대학교 의과대학을 졸업한 이길여는 미국 병원과 일본 대학에서 선진 의술을 배웠다. 유학파 출신에도 불구하고 서울이 아닌 인천에서 산부인과 의원을 열었고 차츰 규모를 키워 대학과 병원, 신문사를 포함한 재단을 일궜다. 그동안 국내에서 특정 병원 경영인 대한 연구는 부족했고 1세대 병원 경영인에 대한 고찰은 거의 없었다. 본 연구에서는 Lumpkin & Dess(1996) 등이 제시한 자율성(Autonomy), 혁신성(Innovativeness), 진취성(Proactiveness), 경쟁적 공격성(Competitive aggressiveness), 위험 감수성(Risk-taking) 등 기업가정신의 5가지 특성을 바탕으로 이길여의 기업가정신을 분석했다. 연구 결과 이길여는 직원에게 일정 부분 재량권을 부여해 능력을 발휘하도록 유도했고 해외 사례를 국내 병원 경영에 적용하는 혁신성도 보였다. 미래 상황을 예측해 이질적인 4개 대학을 일찌감치 통합하는 진취성도 보였으며 인재영입, 시설 투자를 아끼지 않는 경쟁적 공격성을 보였다. 위험을 무릅쓰고 대형 투자도 마다하지 않는 위험 감수성도 지녔다. 이길여는 의료 경영인의 성공 사례가 부족한 국내 병원 경영인 등 공공분야 경영인들에게 좋은 사례가 될 것이다.

영문 초록

Dr. Gachon Lee Gil-ya, founder of Gil Medical Center and Gachon Medical University, is the only woman among nine doctors who have established hospitals and universities together here. A graduate of Seoul National University College of Medicine, Lee studied advanced medicine at U.S. hospitals and Japanese universities. Despite her background in studying abroad, she opened obstetrics and gynecology clinics in Incheon, not Seoul, and gradually expanded its size to form foundations that include universities, hospitals and newspapers. There has been a lack of research on certain hospital managers in South Korea and little consideration has been given to first-generation hospital managers. In this study, we analyzed the entrepreneurship of entrepreneurship based on five characteristics: Autonomy, Innovative, Proactive, Competitive Aggression, Risktakening, etc. presented by Lumpkin & Dess(1996). According to the research, the team encouraged employees to exercise their abilities by granting them a certain portion of discretion and also showed innovation in applying overseas cases to the management of hospitals in South Korea. She also showed initiative in integrating four disparate universities early on by predicting future situations, and also showed competitive aggression that spared no effort to attract talent and invest in facilities. She also has a sense of risk that she does not hesitate to make large investments at the risk of taking risks. Lee Gil-Ya will be a good example for managers in the public sector, including those in local hospitals, who lack a successful model for medical managers.
