국문 초록

IT 산업에 속한 기업의 연구개발 활동은 성장 및 혁신을 위한 중요한 요소이지만 불확실성이 높고 장기간 투자가 필요하다는 특징이 있다. 본 연구에서는 연구개발 활동이 중요한 IT기업이 비IT 기업들과 비교하여 연구개발지출의 원가행태에 차이가 있는지 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 2002년부터 2017년까지 국내 증권시장에 상장된 기업을 대상으로 Anderson et al.(2003) 원가하방경직성 분석모형을 활용하였다. 분석결과 첫째, IT기업은 비IT기업에 비해 매출이 감소할 때 연구개발활동을 비례하여 감소시키지 않아 연구개발비가 하방경직적인 형태를 보였다. 둘째, 글로벌 금융위기 이전에는 IT 기업의 연구개발지출이 유의한 하방경직성을 보이나, 글로벌 금융위기 이후 기간에는 하방경직성을 보이지 않았다. 이러한 연구결과는 IT기업의 연구개발투자는 조정비용(adjustment cost)이 크고, 일시적으로 매출이 하락하더라도 연구개발지출을 유지하려는 경향이 존재하나, 글로벌 금융위기 이후에는 IT기 업들도 미래 불확실성에 대응하기 위하여 매출변화에 따라 유연하게 조정하고 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

R&D activities in the IT industry are important drivers for corporate growth and innovation, but they are characterized by high uncertainty and a need for long-term perspective, This study analyzes whether IT companies which have significant R&D activities differed in their R&D cost behavior compared to those of other industrial groups. Based on data of the Korean listed companies from 2002 to 2007, this study adopts Anderson et al. (2003) model to test whether cost behavior of R&D investment in IT industry is more sticky than that in non-IT industry. The results show that IT companies maintain (or less decrease) their research and development activities during the decrease in sales compared to non-IT companies. Second, R&D cost stickiness was statistically significant before the 2008 global financial crisis, but this pattern has been disappeared after the global financial crisis. This study contributes to the literatures by showing that when there is temporarily fall in sales, R&D investments in the IT industry tend to maintain (or less decrease) R&D spending due to a large adjustment cost. However, after 2008 global financial crisis, IT companies have also changed their R&D investment changed in proportional to sales change of the firms to respond to future uncertainties.
