『本朝女史』 속 첩의 존재

국문 초록

본고는 1898년에 저술된 『본조여사』 에 등장하는 첩을 대상으로 첩의 존재 양상과 근대전환기 유교적 지식인의 첩에 대한 인식을 살펴보고자 작성되었다. 김상집은 <첩> 항목에서는 물론 <현부>, <혜식> 등의 항목에서 총22명의 첩에 대한 기록을 남겼다. 이에 부(夫)와 첩(妾)의 결연, 발언하는 주체, 위계질서에 도전이라는 3개의 유형으로 나누어 첩의 존재 양상을 살피고 이들 첩을 통해 드러나는 김상집의 여성 인식을 규명해보았다. 김상집은 남성이 일시적 성적 욕망으로 취첩하지 않고 운명적인 인연에 의해 결연하는 것에 주목했다. 이러한 결연 과정에는 본처 이 외에 또 다른 여성과의 결합을 정당화하는 남성주의적 사고가 반영되어 있다. 김상집은 지인지감과 통찰력, 옳고 그름을 판단할 줄 아는 첩의 목소리에 귀를 기울이고 그들을 발언하는 주체로 인식했다. 김상집은 자신의 신분을 자각하는 첩을 긍정적으로 평가하는 반면 자신의 권리를 지키기 위해 위계 질서에 도전하며 적처의 신분을 획득한 여성을 지혜롭다고 판단하기도 하였다. 김상집의 첩에 대한 인식에는 남성주의적 사고와 가부장적 성 윤리가 반영되어 있다. 한편, 주체적으로 발언하는 첩과 권력에 저항하며 자기 권리를 찾는 첩을 우호적으로 대하고 있다. 이처럼 모순되고 이중적인 모습은 김상집 개인의 한계이자 근대전환기를 살던 지식인의 과도기적 모습이다.

영문 초록

This paper was written to examine the existence of a concubine and the perception of a Confucian intellectual s in Bonjoyeosa in 1898. Kim Sang-jip recorded the concubine not only in the list of concubines but also in the categories of the concubine and the wise wife and wisdom, leaving a record of 22 concubines. In this paper, I examined the existence of concubine by dividing into three types of husband and wife s relationship, uttering subject, and challenge to hierarchy. Then, I tried to identify the female recognition of Kim Sangjip. Kim Sangjip noticed that men are not chirped by temporary sexual desire but are determined by their fateful relationship. This process of marriage reflects the masculinist thinking that justifies the union with another woman in addition to the main body. Kim Sangjib is highly regarded for consistently subjective and wise women throughout the first half of this book. He listened to the women s voices, who knew how to judge their feelings and insights, right and wrong, and recorded them with a friendly eye. Kim Sangjib positively assessed the concubine s awareness of his identity, but he also judged women wise to challenge the hierarchy and protect the rights of his family and break the family system. In this way, Kim Sangjip shows a conflicting and dualistic view that women who are self-sufficient to speak and behave in a self-conscious manner are considered to be wise, while their concubines conforming to patriarchal order, family order, and order are desirable. This is also the transitional period of the intellectual who lived in the era of modern transition as it is the limit of individual Kim Sangjib.
