국문 초록

본 연구는 5·10총선을 둘러싼 논의들에 관해 1차 사료를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 먼저, 이승만의 권력의지가 분단을 초래했다는 비판들을 소련문서들을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 아울러, 권력중심 론 적 시각에 대해서는 한반도 분단은 필연적이었으며 정치가에게 권력의 추구는 삶의 본질이라는 서중석과 커밍스(Bruce Cumings)의 견해를 각각 제시하였다. 다음으로, 5·10총선 실시를 둘러싼 갈등에 대해 최근 연구들은 현실주의 간 갈등의 측면에도 주목하고 있음을 지적하였다. 이어서. 커밍스가 높이 평가하고 있는 프랭켈(Ernst Fraenkel)의 보고서에서 5·10선거의 결과인 대한민국정부가 자유로운 선거의 산물이자 전체 한국 민의 2/3의 의사를 대표하고 있다고 기술하고 있었음을 보여주었다. 마지막으로 대한민국은 건설되었지만 통일된 민족국가에 대한 열망을 충분히 흡수하지 못하는 악순환이 지금까지 계속되고 있다는 시각이 최근 대두되고 있음을 검토하였다. 즉, 최신 논의들이 국가건설과정에서 제도권 밖으로 밀려난 민족주의를 김구와 중도파를 중심으로 수용할 수 있는 담론을 수립할 필요가 있다고 지적하고 있음을 정리한 것이다.

영문 초록

This study focused on the historical records around discourses of the national election on May 10th, 1948. First, this study examined that the Soviet records show how the criticism that Syngman Rhee’s will to power led to the division of Korea needs to be reconsidered. In addition, for the power-centered approach, this study presented the arguments made by Joongseok Seo and Bruce Cumings, each of whom argued that the division of the Korean peninsula was inevitable and that the will for power is essential for politicians. Next, with regards to the conflicts surrounding the May 10 election, this study pointed out that recent studies view the incidents as conflicts between realists. This study also showed that the report by Ernest Fraenkl, which was highly appreciated by Cummings, describes how the government of the Republic of Korea was an outcome of a free election and represented two-thirds of the entire Korean citizens. Lastly, although the Republic of Korea has been established, the vicious cycle of Korea being unable to adequately absorb a unified nation-state has recurred, even up to now. This article, therefore, argued that a discourse that could put with Kim Gu and the moderates at the center and embrace nationalism, which was pushed out of the system in the nation-building process, should be established.
