19세기 말 유교지식인 김상즙이 제시하는 이상적 조선 여성상

국문 초록

본고는 1898년, 충청도의 유교 지식인 김상즙이 쓴 「본조여사」를 분석하고 이를 토대로 저자가 이상적으로 생각했던 조선 여성의 자질이나 이상적 여성상을 추출해 보고자 시도되었다. 「본조여사」의 서지, 작가 정보 등에 대해서는 기존 논의가 있으므로 본고는 기존에는 다루어지지 않았던 분류 항목들을 비교 검토하고, 항목별 일화들을 구체적으로 분석함으로써 19세기 말, 20세기 초 유교 지식인들의 여성담론의 지형 속에서 「본조여사」가 지니는 차별적 지점에 대해 검토하였다. 12개 항목에 속한 일화들을 검토한 결과, 본조여사 에서는 열녀와 관련하여 분류 기준이 모호하게 사용되었고, 항목에 상관없이 여성들의 지적 능력, 안목 등이 반복하여 언급되는데, 특히 정치적 상황에서 판단을 해야 하는 일화들이 다수 있었다. 또 정절 이데올로기 및 전통적 부덕의 범주 안에 들어가는 일화들도 함께 수록되었다. 유교 지식인으로서 저자는 이렇듯 기존의 유교적 가부장제가 여성에게 덕목으로 강조해 온 내용들과 공통되는 것도 있었으나 차이점을 보여주는 것도 있었다. 우선 그는 더 이상 열녀를 남편에 대한 성적 종속성을 지키는 여성으로 국한 시키지 않은 채 기존의 열녀에 대해 수용한다. 또 그는 여성의 능력 중 지적 자질이나 정치적 판단력을 중시하며, 특히 여성의 고생이나 고통에 대한 공감도 보여준다. 저자는 전통적인 삼강오륜을 중시하나 근대전환기 조선 현실에서 그가 중요하게 생각한 여성의 자질은 당대를 헤쳐 나갈 정치적 판단력이었다.

영문 초록

Bonjoyeosa(本朝女史) was compiled by Kim Sang-Jeup(金商楫:1862～?) in 1898. Kim was a Confucian intellectual who lived in Chungcheong Province. He listed anecdotes of women of Joseon divided into twelve categories so that their great deeds would not be forgotten. Even though Bonjoyeosa is an important material for research on women s life in Joseon, only one published paper can be found dealing with the manuscript. Since the bibliography and the author have already been discussed in that paper, this study intends to analyze the quality or image of Joseon woman the author thought ideal. In all of the twelve categories, the women s intellectual capacity and insight are repeatedly mentioned. Especially, there are multiple anecdotes of women making wise judgements on the political situations. Meanwhile, also a number of anecdotes are related to female chastity and other womanly virtues. An examination of the Virtuous Woman (烈女) category shows that the author, unlike the majority of biographies of exemplary women written in the 18th and 19th centuries, did not confine the definition to the women who maintained their sexual subordination to their husbands such as those who passively internalized the ideology of female chastity and took their own lives after their husbands death. In addition, he regarded women s intellectual capacity and political judgement as important and also showed sympathy to their sufferings and pain. Although he valued the traditional three fundamental bonds and five constant virtues (三綱五倫), the reality of Joseon in 1898 made him choose the political judgement to be an important quality of a virtuous woman.
