영문 초록

This article does research on the spirituality of hospitality seen through the lens of Ignatian spiritual tradition. It is hard to find research about such a theme. What would be the reasons? One of the reasons is that the theme of hospitality has been studied mainly focusing on the receiving nature of hospitality. This keeps most studies about hospitality at a distance from a perspective of an apostolic spirituality whose primary focus is put on the nature of being sent. Paradoxically enough, however, this point opens to us a new perspective on the spirituality of hospitality through Ignatian spirituality which is very apostolic. In order to look into this theme, I will first expound the dynamic of the term, “hospitality.” Then, I will explore the Autobiography of Ignatius of Loyola in order to explain how such a dynamic is related Ignatius’ experience of the Trinitarian God. I will show that the spirituality of hospitality in Ignatian spiritual tradition flows from the Trinitarian God. Then, I will move to the Spiritual Exercises in order to explore how Ignatius’ experience of hospitality in the Autobiography is reflected in apostolic spirituality in the Spiritual Exercises. Then, I will illustrate how the first Jesuits, who were formed by the Spiritual Exercises, understood and lived the apostolic characteristic of hospitality found in the Spiritual Exercises. Finally, I will conclude this article by noting that the distinctiveness of the spirituality of hospitality seen through the lens of the Ignatian spiritual tradition is a radically apostolic one which is grounded in being sent to frontiers so that all people should be, and are, welcomed.
