The objective of this experiment was to evalute the effect of high levels of zinc oxide on starter pig performance and its interaction with high levels of copper sulfate from 3 to 7 weeks of age. The experiment consisted of six dietary treatments in a 3×2 factorial arrange ment of treatments to evaluate 3 levels of copper sulfate (0, 125. 250 ppm) in diets. Diets were formulated to contain similar levels of calcium, phosphorus, lysine and methionine. The soybean meal, dried whey, whey protein concentrate, plasma protein concentrations were constant across all treatment diets. Crossbred pigs weaned at an average age of 20 days and weighing approximately 5.68kg were used in this study. Zinc oxide supplementation at 2500 ppm of complete diets increased average daily gain and average daily feed intake of pigs during the 28 days postweaning. The increased rate of gain due to zinc oxide supplementation was influenced by level of copper sulfate with the response being greater at 250 ppm than at 125 ppm. Zinc oxide supplementaton also increased daily feed intake to a greatr extent in diets without copper sulfate than in diets with copper sulfate. The improvement in feed efficiency due to zinc oxide increased, however, as the level of copper sulfate increased. Results of this experiment suggest that nursery diets for pigs 3 to 7 weeks of age should contain 2500 ppm Zn from ZnO and 250 ppm Cu from CuSO₄.
