생애사를 통한 한센인의 ‘기라이’(사회적 배제)에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 한센인들이 경험하였던 ‘기라이’ (사회적 배제)를 그들이 살아온 역사를 통하여 이해하고자 한다. 즉, 생애사라는 맥락에서 한센인들이 당한 사회적 배제는 어디서 어떻게 나타났는지, 사회적 배제를 당하는 가운데서 한센인들은 어떻게 자신의 삶을 살아내었는지에 관해 이해하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한센인거주시설에 살고 있는 한 한센인을 대상으로 하여 생애사에 관한 자료를 수집하고, 이에 대한 분석을 실시하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 구술자는 한센병이 있다는 이유로 자신이 받아야 했던 설움과 한, 그리고 그에 따른 피해 의식을 ‘배고픔’으로 대체하고 있었다. 둘째, 구술자는 곤경에 처하였을 때 한센인거주시설에서 아무런 도움을 받지 못함으로써 그 체제 안에서도 사회적 배제를 다시금 체험하게 되었다. 셋째, 한센인들이 고령화되어 정착지가 거주시설로 전환되는 과정에서 구술자는 그동안 정착지에서 해온 역할을 잃어야 했으며, 이를 어쩔 수 없이 받아들이면서 다시금 좌절을 경험하였다. 넷째, 구술자는 한센인이라는 이유로 사회적으로 배제된 삶을 살았지만 사회 구성원으로서의 역할을 다하였을 뿐 아니라 자기 삶의 능동적 주도자로서 자신에게 주어진 역할 또한 포기하지 않는 모습을 보여주었다.

영문 초록

Through their life histories, this study tried to understand the ‘Girai’(social exclusion) that people with Hansen’s disease had experienced. In other words, in a context of life histories, this study tried to understand where and how the social exclusion of people with Hansen’s disease had occurred and how they had lived their own lives amid the social exclusion. For this, the researchers collected and analyzed life history data from a person with Hansen’s disease who had lived in a residential facility. The results of this study are as follows. First, the storyteller substituted hunger for his sorrow, deep resentment, and victim mentality caused by Hansen’s disease. Second, by not receiving support even from the residential facility for people with Hansen’s disease when in trouble, the storyteller experienced social exclusion again in the system. Third, in the process of switching over from settlement to residential facility in the reality that people with Hansen’s disease were aging, the storyteller experienced frustration again while he was forced to accept a total loss of roles. Fourth, although the storyteller lived a life as a person with Hansen’s disease who was socially excluded, he not only carried his weight as a member of society, but also did not give up his role as an active agent of his own life.
