국문 초록

이 연구는 장애인이 가족과의 관계 속에서 자신을 장애인으로 인식하고 정체화하는 과정에 대해 분석을 시도한 것이다. ‘장애’는 사회적 과정을 통해 만들어지고 호명되기 시작한다. 이 과정에서 선천적 장애인이 출생 이후 가장 먼저, 빈번히 대면하는 가족을 통해서 장애 정체성이 어떻게 장애인 당사자에게 투영되고, 장애 정체화로 나아가게 되는지 보았다. 연구의 주된 사례는 연구자 자신이며, 자기민속지학을 통해 연구자가 장애인 정체성을 가족으로부터 어떻게 호명받고 장애인으로 자기 정체성을 인식하게 되었는지 살펴보았다. 장애에 관하여 부모가 지니고 있는 인식은 발화되는 표현과 그에 따른 호명의 과정을 통해 장애인 당사자들에게 그대로 심어지고 있었다. 또한, 장애인 당사자가 출생하기 전에 가족이 지니고 있던 장애에 대한 인식의 정도나 가족이 처해있는 사회ㆍ경제적 요건에 따라 가족구성원 안에서 장애를 다루는 방식이 달라질 수 있다. 이는 장애인 당사자가 장애인으로 정체성을 부여받는 과정에 영향을 미치며, 가족이 어떤 방식을 취하느냐에 따라서 장애인 정체성의 형성 정도가 달라진다. 장애를 바라보고 대응하는 방식은 동정ㆍ시혜ㆍ극복의 대상으로의 장애, 은폐하고 싶은 장애, 생활개선을 위한 도구로서의 장애, 사회저항으로서 견인차적 장애가 있다. 이 중에서 가족이 어떤 방식을 택하느냐에 따라 장애인 당사자가 자신의 정체성을 부정적으로 받아들일 수도 있고, 그 반대로 자기비하에 머물지 않고 나름의 적극적 주체로서 자신의 정체성을 받아들일 수도 있다.

영문 초록

This research examines the processes of self-recognition and self - identification of ‘the disabled’ in the family relationship of the disabled. ‘Disability’ has been interpellated and made by social processes. The first and subsequent frequent encounters by the person with inborn disability with family members are projected to the person and makes the person identifying oneself as ‘the disabled’. The main target of this research is the researcher himself and, through autoethnography how the researcher himself has been interpellated and has recognized one’s own identity as the disabled is examined. The expressions spoken out of the parents’ based on the preexistent recognition on disability and consequential interpellation processes have implanted parents’ recognition of disability to the person’s self-recognition on disability. Furthermore, the ways of treating disability can vary depending on families’ recognition on disability before the birth of the person with disability and their socioeconomic conditions. These factors influence the processes of the person’s self-identification as the disabled, and the identity acquired can differ depending on responses of family members toward disability. Family responses include 1) disability that must be overcome and brings sympathy and benevolence, 2) disability that must be concealed, 3) disability that is a tool for improvement of living, 4) disability that drives social resistance. Depending on responses, the person with disability can either accept the negatively recognized self-identity or accept the self-identity of active subject doing away with self-contempt.
