고학력 여성의 ‘워킹맘되기’에 대한 문화역사적 활동이론적 접근

국문 초록

이 연구는 워킹맘들이 일과 육아를 병행하는 과정에서 겪는 어려움들이 여러 가지 사회구조적 제약들로부터 기인함에도 불구하고 여성 개인이 해결해야 할 문제로 치부되는 점에 대한 문제의식에서 출발했다. 이에, 인간활동에 대한 체계적 분석을 통해 사회구조적 모순을 해결하는 과정을 탐구하는 문화역사적 활동이론의 활동체계 모형으로 워킹맘의 일과 육아 병행과정을 살펴보았다. 자녀 육아기에 있는 7명의 고학력 워킹맘들을 대상으로 개인당 3-5회의 심층면담을 수행하여 자료를 수집했으며 연구자료는 문화역사적 활동이론의 활동체계 모형을 기반으로 분석 및 해석하였다. 자료의 분석 결과, 첫째, 연구참여자들이 경험하는 어려움은 일과 육아활동의 순조로운 병행을 위한 분명한 ‘경계 만들기’, 남들에게 이해받지 못한 채 직장인과 엄마의 주체성을 오가는 ‘변신하는 힘겨움’, 그리고 본질적으로 예측 불가능하고 통제하기 어려운 속성을 갖는 일과 육아활동체계의 ‘통제되지 않는 일과 육아의 경계’라는 구조적 모순들이 드러났다. 둘째, 이러한 제약과 충돌들을 경험하면서 연구참여자들은 맺고 끊기의 일하는 방식과 경계 짓기와 허물기의 삶의 방식을 학습하며 워킹맘으로서의 정체성을 학습해가고 있었다. 이상의 연구결과는 워킹맘의 심리적 고충을 밝히는데 집중되어 있던 선행연구와 달리 활동체계의 프레임으로 사회구조적 맥락 속에서의 제약들을 보다 체계적으로 밝혔을 뿐 아니라 그러한 구조적 모순에 대응하는 과정에 학습의 관점에서 접근했다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of highly educated working mothers from a Cultural Historical Activity Theoretical (CHAT) perspective. The specific research questions are as such : First, what personal challenges and structural contradictions do they experience? Second, how do they manage and deal with such problems and what are the consequences? Qualitative in-depth interviews were undertaken with 7 highly educated working mothers with the youngest child under 7-years old. Each participants were met at least 3 times during the period of 8 months and each interview took around 1 or 2 hours. The expanded model of activity systems was adopted as the framework for content analysis. The main findings are as follows. First, there were discordance at the personal psychological level, the social relational level, and the societal activity system level. While working mothers tried to juggle work and child rearing activity by strictly separating them and fixing boundaries, working the two activities needed fluid and flexible adjustment and revisioning. Second, the interviewees gradually learned to handle the contradictions by flexibly setting and resetting the boundary’s of their work and childrearing activity. In conclusion, it was revealed that the struggles of Korean working mothers were not their personal matters but something caused by contradiction in the societal level. The course of their experience dealing with different kinds of discordance could be regarded as a process of learning and constructing new subjectivity. According to such findings and conclusions, implications for further research was discussed.
