This pilot study provides a quantitative analysis of student survey data to discover Korean university students’ perceptions and motivation to study TOEIC based on the Pass/Non-pass evaluation system as one of the liberal art courses. It also investigated how students’ course preference affected their achievement measured by their mid-and-final tests through self-evaluation. A total of 123 students who took TOEIC classes answered a questionnaire and the results were analyzed by using SPSS 18.00. Three major findings were noted. First, there existed the correlations among the seven categories of the questionnaire items (Class satisfaction, Motivation, Perceived Competence, Perceptions on Pass/Non-Pass evaluation, Class policy, Reasons for Class Choice, and Class Management). Second, with regard to the effect of the class levels on the seven categories, the ANOVA results did not show any significant mean differences across all the variables among the three classes. Furthermore, the results revealed that the scores in each category demonstrated extremely similar patterns among the three proficiency levels, indicating that their class levels did not affect the participants’ overall perceptions of TOEIC class. Third, learners in the Advanced and Intermediate classes demonstrated substantial improvement while learners in the Novice class did not show any improvement. (197 words)
