In order to determine the cultivation methods for accelerating generation advancement three times a year utilizing the natural condition in Iri area, the effects of sowing date and vinyl cover on heading time and some characters were investigated about nine varieties of spring sown barley possessing from grade Ⅰ to Ⅵ of growth habits. In the spring-sown cultivation, critical sowing date for heading of the varieties differing in their growth habit was on February 23 for Ⅴ-Ⅵ, March 8 for Ⅲ-Ⅳ and March 22 for Ⅰ-Ⅱ growth habit varieties, respectively. In direct sowing of spring cultivation, the earlier sowing date caused the earlier heading date, but the more days were required for the heading. Culm length became longer in early sowing and it was 45-87 cm when sowing was conducted on February 23 which was the second sowing date of growth habit Ⅴ and Ⅵ varieties for accelerating generation advancement 3 times a year. Spike length did not show a certain tendency by annual or sowing date, and it was 4.2-8.4 cm in the treatment sown on February 23. There was similar tendency in number of grains per spike annually regardless of sowing date and vinyl cover, and it was 45-60 grains per spike in the treatment sown on February 23. There was not greatly different in the heading date of barley between directly sown under the field condition and grown in the greenhouse after seed-green vernalization in incubator, but longer culm and more number of grains per spike were obtained under the field condition. Powdery mildew and leaf rust became severer in all varieties with the sowing date delayed. In the results of second generation for accelerating generation advancement three times a year, when unripen seeds harvested from first generation were sown on field on February 23, the heading became finished on May 31, and immature seeds were harvested until June 20, and it took 120 days for the periods of second generation.
