Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cognitive stimulation programs with physical activities on the improvement of the cognitive ability, instrumental activities of daily living, and quality of life of the elderly with mild cognitive impairment. Method: The patients were assigned to a cognitive stimulation training program including a physical activities group and a general cognitive stimulation training group; the two groups underwent their respective programs with 60 minute sessions, once per week for 8 weeks. The Mini-Mental State Examination-Dementia Screening (MMSE-DS), a modified Boston Naming Test, word list recall, construction praxis, and ACLS (Allen Cognitive Level Screening) were conducted before and after the experiment to evaluate the patients’ cognitive ability. K-IADL (Koran-Instrumental Activities of Daily Living)were measured before and after the program and compared to examine instrumental activities of daily living, and GQOL-D (Geriatric Quality of Life Dementia) was used to examine changes in the quality of life. Results: In intragroup comparisons, both groups showed significant differences in MBNT, WLR, MMSE-DS, and ACLS, which are scales of cognitive ability, and GQOL-D, which is a scale of the quality of life, before and after training (p<.05). In intergroup comparisons, significant differences were shown in the scale GQOL-D (p<.05). Conclusion: Cognitive stimulation programs accompanying physical activities and general cognitive stimulation programs are efficient programs for the cognitive ability and quality of life of the elderly with mild cognitive impairment. This study showed that the quality of life index of the subjects of the cognitive stimulation program accompanying physical activities was higher than for those who did not take part.
