국문 초록

기계화 ․ 자동화의 진전으로 육체에 의존하는 일이 줄어들면서 ‘키=생산성’ 간의 관계가 직접적으로 연결되는 직업은 상당히 줄어들었다고 할 수있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 키는 여전히 노동시장에서의 성과를 결정하는중요한 요인의 하나로 인식되고 있다. 청년층을 둘러싼 일자리 여건이 녹록치 않은 상황에서 취업을 앞둔 청년들에게 외모나 키와 같은 요인들도타인과의 차별화가 가능한 요인으로 인식되기도 하며 때로는 구직자들의마음을 졸이게 하는 요인이 되기도 한다. 이처럼 키가 일종의 ‘경쟁력’으로 여겨지고 있는 상황에서 본 연구는노동시장에서의 신장 프리미엄(height premium)에 대해 실증적으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국직업능력개발원의 ｢한국교육고용패널조사(KEEP)｣를 이용하여 4년제 대학을 졸업한 여학생을 대상으로 이들의노동시장 이행(transition from school to work) 과정에서의 신장 프리미엄에 초점을 두고 분석을 실시하였다. 취업가능성이나 괜찮은 일자리를 갖게 될 가능성 그리고 첫 일자리에서의 소득수준에 대한 분석결과에서 신장 프리미엄이 존재할 가능성이 확인되었다. 이는 주로 작은 키에 대한 불이익보다는 큰 키에 대한 프리미엄의형태로 노동시장 이행과정에서 신장 프리미엄이 존재하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 아직까지 실증연구가 활발하게 이루어지지 않은 노동시장에서의 신장(height)의 영향력을 대표성 있는 통계자료를 이용하여다각적으로 살펴보았다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

영문 초록

It can be said that the number of jobs that directly associate height with productivity has significantly decreased as the progress of mechanization and automation reduced the dependence on the human body. Nevertheless, height is still regarded as one of the important determinants of performance in a labor market. The young are put under poor employment conditions and appearance and height are considered factors that enable young job-hunting people to be differentiated from others and that can sometimes make job seekers held in suspense. As height is now considered a kind of competitiveness, the purpose of this study was to empirically analyze height premium in a labor market. For this purpose, the Korea Education and Employment Panel (KEEP) in the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training was used to analyze height premium for female university graduates in the transition from school to work. The analysis confirmed that height premium worked in the possibility of being employed, in the wage level, and in the possibility of getting a decent job and mainly had the form of premium for being tall rather than disadvantages to being small in the transition from school to work. This study is significant in that it used representative statistical data to make a multilateral analysis of the influence of height in a labor market, which had rarely been addressed empirically.
