국문 초록

본 논문은 외국인투자자의 지분율이 국내기업의 생산성에 미치는 영향을 분위회귀(Quantile Regression)모형을 통하여 실증적으로 분석한다. 분석은 2000년부터 2009년까지의 한국표준산업분류(KSIC) 상의 제조업에 속한 외부감사기업 5,747개를 대상으로 한다. 지금까지 선행되어 온 과거의 연구들은 외국인직접투자가 투자 대상 기업의 생산성에 통계적으 로 유의한 양(+)의 효과를 가진다는 결과를 일반적인 평균회귀모형으로 분석해 왔다. 이에 반해, 본 연구는 외국인지분율(equity)이 생산성분포(lperadd)에 어떠한 패턴을 보이는가를 중점적으로 살펴보고, 이를 외국인직접투자의 진입형태, 즉 Greenfield형인지 M&A형인지에 따라 나누어 분석하였다. 분석결과, 높은 생산성분위일수록 외국인지분율이 높은 양(+)의 효과를 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 M&A형 투자일 때는 생산성분위가 높아질수록 투자지 분율의 양(+)의 추정계수 값은 감소한 반면, Greenfield형 투자일 때는 이러한 현상이 나타나지 않았다.

영문 초록

Does an increase in equity shares owned by foreigners generate an increase in firm’s productivity? The evidence from previous literature seems to lean towards supporting such argument. Yet, there are some studies that say otherwise which indicates that there is still some room of ambiguity. Therefore in this study we implement quantile regression approach to provide an explanation for this empirical ambiguity. The study finds that equity shares give positive and statistically significant effects on firms’ productivity. The results indicates that the effects of equity owned by foreigners on productivity ascends as it moves from the lower quantile to the higher quantile of the productivity distribution. However when we investigate only M&A firms, such pattern is not present. In fact, the effects of equity on productivity are higher in lower quantiles than higher quantiles. Yet with greenfield such trend was absent.
