정선(鄭敾)의 ‘시의도(詩意圖)’를 통해 본 ‘시(詩)’와 ‘그림(畵)’의 상호작용에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

동아시아 회화의 중요한 특징 중 하나는 ‘시(詩)’와 ‘그림(畵)’ 사이의 유기적이면서도 역동적인 관계에서 찾을 수 있다. 시와 회화 간의 밀접한 관계는 당말(唐末)에서 송대(宋代)를 거치며 성립된 문인화(文人畵)의 전통 속에서 더욱 확고해져 갔으며, 시를 주제로 창작된 회화인‘시의도(詩意圖)’는 점차 동아시아 회화의 대표적 장르 중 하나로 자리 잡았다. 이처럼 그림과 글을 예술적 총체로서 결합하여 보는 전통은 조선시대 문인들의 회화 창작에도 반영되었다. 겸재 정선(謙齋 鄭敾, 1676~1759)은 조선 후기에 들어서며 더욱 활발하게 제작된 ‘시의도’의 유행에 중요한 역할을 한 화가들 중 한 명이다. 이 글에서는 정선의 구체적인 작품들을 통해 동아시아의 ‘시화일률(詩畵一律)’의 전통이 함축하는 철학적, 미학적 논의들에 대해 고찰한다. 동아시아 예술에서 시와 회화 두 예술 장르들이 공통점과 차이점을 기반으로 통합되거나 상호 확장하며 새로운 은유와 상징을 만들어 내는 방식들을, 작품 분석뿐 아니라 서양 예술관과의 비교를 통해서도 살펴볼 것이다. 정선의 시의도 작품들을 통해, 시적 이미지에 근거해 만들어진 도상화된 이미지의 활용, 시의(詩意)와 화의(畵意)의 상호 전환과 확장, 현실의 경험을 통한 시정(詩情)과 그림의 통합 등, 동아시아 회화 전통 속에서 시와 그림의 상호작용이 지닌 특수성과 가치들을 밝혀보고자 한다.

영문 초록

One of the most significant qualities of East Asian painting lies in the organic and dynamic interplay between “poetry” and “painting.” This intimate relationship between poetry and painting was firmly established in the tradition of literati painting that was formed in the years from the late Tang Dynasty to the Song Dynasty. A great number of paintings based on poems – called “poetry paintings” – were created from the Song Dynasty onward, and this holistic view of poetry and painting also influenced the artistic creation of the Joseon Dynasty’s literary circles. Gyeomjae Jeong Seon (1676-1759) was one of the most prominent painters who led the trend of “poetry painting” in the late Joseon Dynasty. This essay explores the philosophical and aesthetic implications of the integration of poetry and painting in East Asian art through Jeong Seon’s works inspired by poetry. The process by which these two different art forms were fused and expanded based on their similarities as well as differences to create new metaphors and icons is discussed through an analysis of Jeong Seon’s art works as well as a comparison with Western theories. The characteristics and values of the interplay between poetry and image in East Asian painting – including the appropriation of poetic images, the interchange between poetic implication and visual expression, and the interweaving of personal experiences, poems, and images – are illuminated.
