행장(行狀)에 재현된 조선시대 어머니상

국문 초록

본고는 한국문집총간 소재 17·18세기 어머니 행장을 대상으로 하여 그 재현 양상을 살피고, 조선시대 양반 여성 재현의 의미를 고찰하는 것이 목표 이다. 조선시대 여성 행장 중 그 수가 가장 많은 것이 어머니 행장이며, 그 서술 분량 또한 풍부하다. 그러므로 어머니 행장의 경우는 보다 섬세한 서술 내용을 확보할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 집안의 어른인 어머니, 할머니 행장에서는 유교적 여성상을 재현하는 데 전형적인 항목도 보이지만, 이 외에 부수적인 교양 자질이나 재능, 여가와 연결 가능한 여공(女功)에 대한 서술 등 다양한 추억들도 적고 있다. 본고는 유교적 여성상에서 예상 가능한 전자보다는 대상 여성의 여타 자질들 및 여가, 취미 등의 요소에 주목하려 한다. 어머니 행장을 분석한 결과, 다수의 행장에서 어머니의 청렴함, 공적 영역에 속한 재화와 사적 영역의 재화를 선명하게 구별하고자 하는 태도, 당대 정치 상황에 대한 판단 등의 일화가 서술됨을 확인하였다. 이는 조선시대 남성들이 어머니에 대한 기억들을 누락 없이 수록하고자 하는 가운데 포함된 것으로, 이 같은 내용들이 본인에게 또 가문의 후손들에게 자기 어머니에 대한 긍정적 기억으로 받아들여 질 수 있다고 판단했기에 선택된 것으로 보인다. 즉 일화의 주인공이 어머니일 경우, 유교 경전이나 조선시대 여성 규훈서에서는 굳이 강조하지 않았던 여성의 판 단 능력, 정치적 감각 등에 대한 적극적 인정이 드러나는 대목이다. 유교 경전이나 규훈서 등의 이념적 담론에서는 판단 주체로서의 여성을 강조하지 않는다. 행장에 나타나는 어머니의 의로움에 대한 서술은 실제 삶의 국면에서 드러나는 인정이라 는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 지식이나 교양, 취미나 재능 등에 대한 서술 양상 분석은 이 같은 요소들이 유교적 덕목을 함양하기 위한 것이었는지 아니면 해당 여성의 개인적 관심사, 지적 호기심 등에 의한 것이었는지를 판단 가능하게 해 준다. 어머니 행장에서 드러나는 지식이나 교양, 여가 등에 대한 서술 양상은 다른 기록을 통해서는 드러나기 어려운 조선시대 양반 여성들의 개인적 면모, 취향, 향유의 면모를 읽어낼 수 있는 잣대가 될 수 있다. 부덕이나 의로움에 비해 여가, 취향 등을 가늠할 수 있는 대상 자료의 수는 적었으나 취미나 여가 등에 대한 고찰은 가족 관계를 전제로 한 어머니나 아내 혹은 딸 등이 아닌 개인 여성으로서의 접근이 가능하다는 점에서 유의미하다.

영문 초록

This presentation focuses on Haengjang of mothers in the 17 th and 18 th century of Choson Dynasty. Haengjang of mothers constitutes the majority of Haengjang of women during the Choson period, and is rich in content. Women had to live under the rigid social restrictions in Choson society, but Mother as the object of filial piety had a strong position within her family. As there are few writings about women from the time, Haengjang provides the richest source of information on women of Choson. Besides Confucious virtue in Haengjang of mothers, there is another element that stands out. It is the description of Mother s righteousness. Righteousness, which is based on the subject s judgement about right and wrong, is a factor that seems distant from Budeok, one of Sadeok, which requires women to fulfill proper female duties. The Haengjang of mothers in the 17th and 18 th century shows that quite a number of women made practical decisions based on their judgement on the political power and their sense of public justice. The Haengjang of mothers and grandmothers, not unlike that of wives, sisters or daughters, certainly includes the descriptions of female virtues such as gentle personality, weaving skills and frugality. Yet, what interests me in Haengjang of mothers and grandmothers is the description of the subject’s refinement and talents which are related to her private interests beyond proper female virtues. The analysis of the narrative style describing the subject s intelligence, refinement, interest, or talent would enable us to determine whether her actions and behaviors were to cultivate the Confucian virtues or to satisfy her personal interest and/or intellectual curiosity. If certain narratives are concluded as the latter, they would be meaningful sources with which we can examine women of Chosǒn as individuals. As there are little documents providing information on Choson women as individuals, Haengjang can be a meaningful and important research material.
