국문 초록

본 연구에서는 해방과 한국전쟁이라는 어려운 환경속에서도 기업을 창업하고 발전시킴으로써 한국의 경제성장을 견인했던 기업과 기업가의 사례를 확인하고자 했다. 그 대상으로 한화그룹의 창업자 현암 김종희를 중심으로 한화그룹의 창업과 그룹으로의 형성과정에 대해 살펴본 결과는 다음과 같았다. 첫째, 현암 김종희는 한국화약주식회사를 창업함으로써 자신이 속했던 분야에 지속적으로 관심을 가지고 전문화했다. 둘째, 현암 김종희는 한국화약산업 발전에 대한 신념과 책임감을 가지고 한국화약산업의 발전을 주도했다. 셋째, 현암 김종희는 국가의 기간산업을 중심으로 사업을 다각화하여 자신의 ‘사업보국’이라는 경영철학을 실현했다. 이상과 같은 연구를 통해 현암 김종희는 해방과 한국전쟁의 어려움 속에서 기업을 창업하고 성장시켜 한국의 급속한 경제성장에 적극적으로 기여했던 한국의 대표적인 창업자였다는 것을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 주어진 환경을 활용하여 경제성장에 기여했던 한국의 기업가들이 한국의 급속한 경제성장을 설명할 수 있는 내생적 요인의 일면을 형성하고 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to investigate a case of the private entrepreneur and business which had led economic growth of South Korea since Korea was freed from Japanese imperialism and the Korean War. In this article, I would like to Chong-Hee Kim who was a founder of Hanwha business group and assess his business achievement. Especially I focus on his commencement and a process of formation as a business group. I find that: (i) Chong-Hee Kim’s establishment for Korea Explosives Co. is a classic case of specialization in his field of industry with continuous concern; (ii) it can be said that Chong-Hee Kim had led the growth of Korean chemical and gunpowder industry with a great conviction and responsibility for the development of Korean economy; (iii) Chong-Hee Kim believed that his business had to dedicate to the national economy and he achieved this philosophy on management by business diversification based on basic industries. From this research, I find that Chong-Hee Kim was one of the distinguished representative entrepreneurs in South Korea. Although he started his business under the worst of economic condition after independence and the Korean War, he had prospered in his business and made a great contribution towards rapid economic growth. In conclusion, rapid growth of Korean economy can be partly explained by entrepreneurs who commenced and successfully developed his own business under the severe economic condition. Therefore, the contribution of these entrepreneurs can be considered one of the endogenous factors for economic growth of Korea.
